• Cop Fires Gun While Striking Suspect - Then Lies About It
Surveillance video that led to assault charges for a Prince George’s County police officer appears to show a gun firing as an officer struck a man in February. The footage from a Brentwood, Md., store appears to show Corp. Donald Taylor striking 19-year-old Ryan Dorm with his gun. A flash upon impact appears to be the gun firing. Taylor lied about the incident, police said. The officer claimed Dorm, believed to be involved in an attempted robbery at a gas station, reached for the officer’s weapon. Dorm spent about four months in jail before prosecutors dropped the charges against him. "Well, the video contradicts what the officer originally wrote in his charging documents,” said Dorm’s lawyer, Jimmy Bell. “What it shows is that my client didn't lie. They print my client is a criminal. They put his face on television saying he committed these crimes, and he didn't." Taylor was charged with second-degree assault last month. Dorm and his lawyer filed a $10 million lawsuit against the police department and Taylor.
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=589_1346768532 Cop runs towards an unarmed suspect, pistol whips him, gun discharges, cops lies about the whole incident, kid spends 4 months in jail anyways. Can't help but think how many incidents like this go unnoticed because of no video recording, and that a police officers word is always assumed to be more credible.
What a cop out
This is pretty horrible but on the other side, asking for 10 million dorrars for 4 months of unfair jail is a bit of an overkill.
I don't agree with the 10 mirron, but I hope they win either way.
...They print my crient is a criminar. They put his face on terevision saying he committed these crimes, and he didn't.
And isn't this seriousry damaging to the guys reputation? It might be hard for him in the future to get a job or something. He deserves some sort of compensation, but 10 mirron is mirking it.
I hate that today's police is seen as another level than a regular human. Just because they're a police it doesn't mean they more worth than us because they got a weapon and a badge. Almost anyone can become a Police.
I wonder if he will get fired.
I'll ignore the obvious issue where the cop hit a nonaggressive person in the head with a gun and comment on the fact that the gun discharged. It shouldn't have discharged. If the officer was following proper safety measures (most notably using a loaded gun as a club, but also that his finger must have been on the trigger for the gun to fire) it wouldn't have fired. The gun is vaguely M9 sized and M9s don't really have much of a habit of going off when struck like hi-points or dc9s do. We should be teaching our police officers better gun safety. Police officers are ore often than not the worst offenders when it comes to the basic rules of firearm safety.
The reason why they put an absurdly high price is so they can negotiate it down into something feasible but still worthwhile. If you wanted ten million, highly unlikely you would get it but you'd put it to twenty million then negotiate that you'll cut it in half.

And I am pretty sure he will at the very least get an official apology, which should void any prejudice against him.
Man, black teenagers must sure look suspicious when they're off to go get some snacks.
Goddam biggot culture...

It's really lucky that this didn't end horribly, too -- I remember a few years back there was a somewhat similar incident where a Brazilian police officer whacked someone in the head with a loaded gun and it went off, except in that case the guy got a bullet to the head and died.
Brazillians often die in more horrible ways than that...
Man, black teenagers must sure look suspicious when they're off to go get some snacks.
Whenever anyone enters a store with a ski mask on (regardless of skin color), as the victim's friend was, it's rather suspicious. As to what happen to the victim, it was clearly reckless and gross overuse of force; but I do wonder what the camera didn't capture (as in, what led up to that point).
I can understand the officer's suspicions. Especially with the skimask and that the other took off from the store was carrying a bag. You can also tell at the beginning of the video that he was running and is slowing himself down. However. Pistol whipping someone is dangerous. If they truly believed him to be a potential armed robber threat, they had two officers... it would have been far better...and easier...to place him at gunpoint with the cover officer while cuffing him with the other officer. The officer made a bad judgment call and is a prime example why you should never pistol whip someone.
That cop needs proper discipline and training. Someone send him to Marine BCT.
