However, it is feared up to 300 oil workers from the UK remain stranded. The rescue teams, who flew out of bases in Malta, searched an area four times the size of Britain to locate workers before evacuating them back to Valletta in Malta last night. They were given food and water and medical assistance before being taken to hotels to rest. They will begin arriving home today. Within hours of them arriving back to safety, the international community ratcheted up the pressure on the Libyan dictator as the security situation in the country deteriorated. The British embassy in Tripoli was closed and its staff hurriedly evacuated. William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, disclosed that a major international diplomatic offensive against the dictator was starting.
I saw on the news earlier that they used UAVs to scout out the area, and used an AC-130 to keep an eye out. Second mission: http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Libya-150-More-Workers-Rescued-From-Libyan-Desert-By-British-Special-Forces/Article/201102415941694?lpos=World_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15941694_Libya%3A_150_More_Workers_Rescued_From_Libyan_Desert_By_British_Special_Forces
British special forces have saved another 150 civilians from the Libyan desert in their second rescue mission this weekend. They were carried to safety on board three RAF Hercules aircraft from a number of locations in the east of the conflict-torn country. Several Britons, many of them oil workers, have been stranded in the country amid the recent unrest which has left the country's leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi clinging to power. Defence Secretary Dr Liam Fox said: "The first and second aircraft have landed in Malta and the third is due to arrive shortly. "The aircraft have picked up civilians from a number of nations including Britain."
Hooray for heroic rescue missions!
An interesting thing that this article doesn't mention but the BBC did last night, apparently all British diplomats in Libya were flown to Malta just before the first rescue mission took place. Also the BBC are reporting that the one of the planes was shot at as it attempted to land at a third runway to pick people up.
I hope they manage to get everyone out.
Can they swoop Gaddafi out of Libya next
i was expecting Gaddafi to light up all the oil but its great to hear they got home in one peace
I hope they manage to get everyone out.
There are only about 200 left, and they're deeper in the city. The only way they're getting out is to put themselves in danger and go on the streets.
It's only a matter of time before Qaddafi starts ordering to take on hostages to bargain.
It's only a matter of time before Qaddafi starts ordering to take on hostages to bargain.
If he does, NATO would come crashing down on top of him.
If he does, NATO would come crashing down on top of him.
I agree, he'd just be screwing himself over if he did that.
Can they swoop Gaddafi out of Libya next
And into a volcano. Or a human rights court.
It's only a matter of time before Qaddafi starts ordering to take on hostages to bargain.
Last time a Dictator did that to some British workers, he got Captured and Hung
Well, there's no stopping the mercenaries and loyalist officers to take on their own initiative.

Since Britain owns no AC-130 gunships i assume they were...unless you made a typo?
It'll have been C-130's to carry them home and shit.
Really so the US was involved? Since Britain owns no AC-130 gunships i assume they were...unless you made a typo?
Britain probably does have an AC-130 (albeit just one) since they have C-130s. An interesting thing that this article doesn't mention but the BBC did last night, apparently all British diplomats in Libya were flown to Malta just before the first rescue mission took place. Since Britain owns no AC-130 gunships i assume they were...unless you made a typo?
It would not surprise me if there was some US assistance to be honest. It's interesting that in the last couple of days the British government have really stepped up their efforts to get people out of there, maybe they are worried things are about to really get worse. [editline]27th February 2011[/editline] Also the BBC are reporting that the one of the planes was shot at as it attempted to land at a third runway to pick people up.
And into a volcano. Or a human rights court.
Let's build a human rights court right on the edge of the caldera of an active volcano So when Gaddafi gets taken there he'll think "holy shit those westerners are badass they build stuff on volcanoes!" We can rig it so a huge spray of lava shoots up every time the judge bangs his gavel

I mean who wants to go the Netherlands to be tried for crimes against humanity a volcano court would make people want to go there!

Its great news people are getting out of there, but it took Cameron long enough to get it sorted.
Britain probably does have an AC-130 (albeit just one) since they have C-130s.
Nah, it is only the United States that fields AC-130's. http://www.raf.mod.uk/equipment/herculesc4c5.cfm AC-130's require pretty significant work done in order to make them mission capable as a weapons platform.
Its great news people are getting out of there, but it took Cameron long enough to get it sorted.
What do you expect him to do? Fly the plane himself? I'm in no doubt this has been in the planning since the unrest, one does not simply fly rescue aeroplanes into a country in unrest.
What do you expect him to do? Fly the plane himself? I'm in no doubt this has been in the planning since the unrest, one does not simply fly rescue aeroplanes into a country in unrest.
Most of the issue people are having with him is that he was off selling weapons in the middle east during the first few days of this when people were calling for things to be done to help people get out of Libya. I did hear on the news last night that there was a lot of issues blocking any actual rescue. Although it did seem that any rescue operation was waiting for other things (BBC were reporting last night that the rescue operation happened after the embassy staff were flown out and the regimes assets being frozen in the UK)
Germany did the same, yet nobody cares :smith: [With paratroopers instead of Spec Ops, but you get the point]
Can they swoop Gaddafi out of Libya next
how about swoop a couple of bombs in instead?
how about swoop a couple of bombs in instead?
They already tried that. Didn't work.
