Ash from Iceland has prompted aviation officials to restrict flights over parts of Norway and the United Kingdom. The ash also caused delays in some flights leaving the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration said. "There are some ground holds in place for flights that would be going through Icelandic air space due to volcanic ash," FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said Wednesday night. Norway's aviation authority AVINOR closed roughly the northern half of the country's airspace on Wednesday evening, from Trondheim to the north. iReport: Are you there? Send your images, videos And U.K. air traffic control provider NATS said early Thursday it was restricting flights in northern Scotland. NATS warned the ash cloud is expected to move south, hinting that the flight-restriction zone could expand. Some Norwegian flights were canceled or delayed because of the airspace closure, AVINOR said. [tab]Map: Eyjafjallajokull glacier [/tab] In the U.S., Delta Air Lines said late Wednesday night that all its flights were operating normally except one from Atlanta, Georgia, to Manchester, England. That flight was returning to Atlanta, said spokeswoman Leslie Parker. The airline was told by British air traffic controllers that too much congestion in the air from other rerouted flights prevented the flight from continuing. Other Delta flights were not impacted because they were not scheduled to take off for a few more hours, Parker said shortly before 11 p.m. ET Wednesday. The ash cloud came from an eruption of a volcano beneath Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull glacier early Wednesday. The eruption -- the latest in a series that began on March 20 -- blew a hole in the mass of ice. Officials said lava is not a big concern, but flooding is, prompting them to evacuate hundreds of people. "The volcano is under the glacier, and it's melting parts of the glacier," said Rognvaldur Olafsson, chief inspector at Iceland's Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. "The rivers will rise and potentially make some damage." It is about 100 miles (160 km) east of the capital, Reykjavik. CNN's Dave Alsup contributed to this report.

:siren:UK airspace will now be closed until 0100 BST (1AM tomorrow morning) at a minimum::siren:
Flights across the UK are to remain grounded for a second day as volcanic ash from Iceland drifts across Europe. At 0830BST, the air traffic control body Nats extended its unprecedented restrictions on UK airspace until at least 0100BST on Saturday. However, a small number of services will be permitted into and out of Northern Ireland and western Scotland. The continuing volcanic eruption caused cancellations across Europe amid fears the ash could cause engine failures. Experts say the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud from the still-erupting volcano could jam aircraft engines, as has happened in previous incidents of planes flying into plumes of volcanic ash. Nats, which restricted all UK airspace at 1200BST on Thursday, allowed five flights overnight from North America into Belfast, Prestwick and Glasgow airports overnight as gaps in the cloud became apparent. The Nats update at 0830 said that flights between Northern Ireland and the western isles of Scotland to and from Glasgow and Prestwick would continue until 1900 on Friday, on a case-by-case basis. North Atlantic traffic to and from Glasgow, Prestwick and Belfast, it added, may also be allowed until then. A further update is expected at 1330.
Source Purtty Piccies: Super Purtty Piccur:
First they take our money and refuse to pay it back, and now they shut down our airports. Fuck Iceland.
Was meant to go to Japan today to start my 3 month gap year. Sat down on the plane for 2 hours, then got told that it was cancelled. Redonkulous! Organised a new flight but now its on saturday instead. The ash hasn't even reached Manchester yet (which is where I was flying from) and its just bullshit. :(
:siren:BREAKING NEWS HOLY FUCKING SHIT:siren: All flights in or out of UK airspace will be suspended between Midday and 6PM
The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace from midday to 1800BST amid fears of engine damage. Airports operator BAA confirmed all flights at Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick would be suspended from midday. And in Scotland, authorities have already shut all their airports. The restrictions, in accordance with international civil aviation policy, were imposed after the Met Office warned ash could clog engines. Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.
Source
First they take our money and refuse to pay it back, and now they shut down our airports. Fuck Iceland.
It was a smart idea to put shitload of money to a country that has the GDP consisting of fishing and whaling.
pokepuns gotta write em all
It started raining here in Norway when the ash crossed our borders. :saddowns:
Well everything looks completley normal here in London, except for the lack of planes (they're usually flying over my area). I'm just glad this happened before my Denmark trip, I'd have been majorly pissed if my flight was canceled.
It was a smart idea to put shitload of money to a country that has the GDP consisting of fishing and whaling.
Maybe the banks should have been lending fish and whales then instead of money they didn't have.
my friend in Ireland is going to be late for school. lucky bastard...
2012 has come early :tinfoil:
some girl i was supposed to be taking out this weekend now has her flight delayed coming back from florida, well this would happen to me now wouldn't it.

At least ash is good for the ground. [editline]03:03PM[/editline]
Oh shit if that gets irradiated like nuclear fallout half the earth's gonna drop like flies.
Chernobyl was worse than that.
At least ash is good for the ground. [editline]03:03PM[/editline] Chernobyl was worse than that.
But there wasn't as much dust/resin falling as this.
Hm nice, it's coming right over me at the momtns. Can't see shit though.
Every airport in Sweden is shutting down aswell. In 1982, a jumbo jet from British Airways flew through an ash cloud, all four engines died.

Um wait, i just noticed, why did it just randomly change from Tuesday 1500 to Friday 1600. Please fix your animation. I was looking forward to ashes. :saddowns:
Fuck, airports in the Netherlands are closing too!
