• ITT Tech shuts down all its schools; students might get loans forgiven
The company that operates ITT Technical Institutes said Tuesday it was permanently closing all its campuses nationwide, blaming the recent move by the U.S. Education Department to ban the for-profit college operator from enrolling new students who use federal financial aid. The shutdown will affect about 35,000 students who were preparing for the start of classes this month and cost more than 8,000 employees their jobs. But those students and those who left the school within the past six months would be eligible to have loans for their ITT education forgiven if they want to start over at another school, federal officials said.
http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-itt-tech-20160906-snap-story.html There goes another questionable for profit "college".
Good now I don't have to see those annoying commercials anymore.
good riddance
Now Devry and others need to go.
Thank god honestly, for-profit schools are such a scam. Good to see one of the main faces of it go down.
There was a school called "The Bradford School" that the recruiters shoved down our throats in junior and senior year of high school, I wonder if that will be closed down too. Also these others schools I hear about, Devry (as TheJoker mentioned), Phoenix Online, etc
As one of the unfortunate saps who went to ITT for a year (bailed out because the quality of education was so poor), this is amazing fucking news. It's ridiculous how much they charged my father and I for a couple of semesters, and the fact that I ESSENTIALLY BECAME THE INSTRUCTOR IN MOST OF MY CLASSES was just fucking terrible. Hopefully I'll be able to get rid of all of this debt, because despite not being there for long, it still remains a massive bulk of the debt I have to pay back. It's just a shame that I found out the hard way just how much of a scam for profit schools are.
I'm going to a for profit school, and our main problem is that it's hard to find good programming teachers because of our location (Portland doesn't have a big game dev industry, unless you count companies that do outsourced modeling/texturing). I think that this school is way better than the horror stories I hear about other for-profit schools, but it still has some major problems. I think it was still worth it for me though.
Hopefully The Art Institutes are next..
So what is a good school then? Is University of North Florida alright? FullSail? I don't know what I should do.
Now Devry and others need to go.
but without devry where will i get my free game demos??? hahahaha fuck those I'm glad this is happening
Digipen is still the go-to gamedev school as far as I know
So what is a good school then? Is University of North Florida alright? FullSail? I don't know what I should do.
Full Sail is expensive and everyone I know that's gone there still has no relevant job, 4 years later Honestly, just go to a local community college. You'll save a lot of money and you'll end up with the same degree
Full Sail is expensive and everyone I know that's gone there still has no relevant job, 4 years later Honestly if you're going for something applicable, just go to a local community college.
Digipen is still the go-to gamedev school as far as I know
Honestly, only if you want a job at Valve. Most other companies don't idolize Digipen as they do. Get all your general ed done at a community college, and then transfer for your last 2 years at a specialized and far more expensive college doing only the classes you need for your career.
So what is a good school then? Is University of North Florida alright? FullSail? I don't know what I should do.
Full Sail is not that good afaik
Oh and take summer classes.
So what is a good school then? Is University of North Florida alright? FullSail? I don't know what I should do.
An accredited uni. This is super important. As for choosing an accredited uni, you have to know what major you want and how far you want to go. If you are getting a Masters or Doctorate degree, or equivalent, the school you go to for your undergrad isn't going to matter too much if they provide sufficient education. Focus on GPA, GRE, and research/internships/impressive projects. Rule of thumb for getting a job is that, unless you went to a top 20 school, where you went doesn't matter. What matters is your GPA (doesn't have to be high, just not lousy), accredited degree (again, accreditation is super important), and previous working experience.
I'm still feeling the regret from my for-profit school and I've yet to hear back on my application for loan forgiveness even though I personally fell into the dates required for it. I just want to close this chapter on my life and go to a 4 year.
I remember when they had ads plastered all over television.
I guess I'll try UNF then.
In case there is anyone here not familiar with ITT Tech, you can find loads of horror stories about the "education" they offered here.

Like, ITT Tech has been a running joke of a school ever since the 1980's, maybe even before that.
Half and half is great too. Get all your general ed done at a community college, and then transfer for your last 2 years at a specialized and far more expensive college doing only the classes you need for your career.
That's what I did, the community college even had a special "transfer AA" program that, if you knew what school you wanted to transfer to, it was sure to get you the credits you needed. Plus because I had some college credits from high school I was able to get more stuff out of the way. IMO for gen-ed stuff like English that you need for a degree but isn't directly relevant to your major you don't really need the big expensive option, just get that taken care of at community college. Two years for a general AA at community college and two more for a specialized BA at the state school was the way to go for me. [editline]6th September 2016[/editline]
Honestly, only if you want a job at Valve. Most other companies don't idolize Digipen as they do.
One big thing with Digipen is that it is geographically very close to a lot of game companies (Valve, Nintendo, Microsoft, etc) so opportunities for networking, etc are strong there. But like a lot of art schools the risk you run is that it's a very narrow and expensive curriculum that won't transfer if you decide to change paths.
Thank god honestly, for-profit schools are such a scam. Good to see one of the main faces of it go down.
Some of them are fine, its important to do your research about where you are going first Sometimes Its hard to get the program you're looking for from government schools, in my case I would of had to move across the state or commute for hours to attend one which I just can't do.
Within the past 6 months? Fuck, I guess I'm still stuck with my debt then :suicide:
Within the past 6 months? Fuck, I guess I'm still stuck with my debt then :suicide:
I'd say it still worth looking into it

Forgive my ignorance but aren't all Universities in the US "for profit"? So I'm not sure what the difference is here. Do they receive no financial aid from the government or what is the difference exactly?
I'd say it still worth looking into it
Nope, no luck for me there, thankfully my debt isn't as big as most :vs:
