A rescue operation is underway after a landslide carried two trucks and a loader into a quarry pit near l'Épiphanie, Que., 50 kilometres north of Montreal.
Quebec provincial police and firefighters responded to a call at 10:45 a.m. today, from people who were working at the gravel pit.
The heavy trucks tumbled at least 100 metres into the pit when the landslide occurred.
Police have airlifted one person out of the pit by helicopter.
The man, who was driving a loader, was not seriously injured.
Rescuers have not been able to make contact with two workers who are still missing.
One truck is still completely buried by gravel and another is partially covered.
"Right now...we have two Sûreté du Québec officers who are on the ground, with a dog handler, trying to find if they can find anybody that's over there," said Quebec provincial police Sgt. Benoît Richard.
"We also have a firefighter with a thermal camera, to see if he can find heat [from] the person that could be there."
Richard said police are awaiting the arrival of a giant crane, in the hope that it will be able to help pull the buried truck out of the gravel.
"It's kind of a risky, tough situation that we have right now," he added
That really sucks for them, I can't imagine myself being stuck under thousands of pounds of gravel...
