Oh, man, I was hoping this was some some automated service reply mistake or something like that McDonalds "don't eat our food" thing.
Nope, just another hacking.
Thought this would be about how Skype for Windows phones and tablets is totally terrible compared to iOS and Android versions.
if this is true, it hilariously flies in the face of their Scroogle campaign
snip, I think I misread/error in original post
gmail for life.. they prolly do the same shit though
I thought it rather strange when I saw PS4 ads on Skype...

Private mailserver for life. As long as you keep it secure and ensure nobody hacks it, that's as secure as you can get with email (and even then somebody can catch it on the way but still, it can't get better).
And it's not like it's rocket science, you need a domain, a server that runs on a static IP, and the rest is trivial and free.

Self hosted for life.
I'm pretty sure I read through all the emails on my server.
I'm just as bad as microsoft.

I'd feel better knowing you glanced at my emails, than shit being stored, read, and sold by a corporation.
Just how I'd feel.
Is there a fucking service we can use which ISN'T being sold off to the government these days? Seriously it's a fucking travesty.

The core problem is that a private mailserver is only as secure as the administrator of it makes it.
Miss a security hole before some black-hat hackers finds it on your server, then you're p.fucked bro.

it helps that my mail server only has two accounts: Postmaster and Me

Your server is not a big target.
Also fail2ban helps

Self hosting is pretty awesome, It might be tricky to set up but it's great in the long run (unless if you have a really terrible internet connection).
I don't think they sell the data to the government. The government just demands it by law I believe. What email would they suggest instead?

Restrict access to rudimentary stuff and keep using something simple, stable and keep it up to date and you are far more secure than on the public servers if for no other reason, then because it's highly unlikely blackhats will go for your own little server.

Seriously the only tweet on that account that is not cringe-inducing in some way.

Come to think of it, I wonder how the owner of the OMG! Ubuntu blog feels about being front and center there. :v:

I use a self hosted mail for serious stuff and a gmail for registering with games and websites.

But Skype cant lie

Considering there's bots out there scanning ever port on every IP address I wouldn't think the way you do.
That's gonna get you fucked over.
At minimum have a PfSense firewall between your server and the world wide web sporting a continuously updated blacklist over naughty ip addresses and port combinations.
But even that isn't entirely safe, but better than just fail2ban.

If you're still ok with Google, I'd recommend Google Hangouts.
It has the better video calling, the actual video quality is much higher and you can do free conference calls. No premium required. The text chat works pretty well so far, it syncs relatively well between desktop and mobile devices.
Now only if more people I know used it...

pretty much the only reason I still own my old website is so I can keep my old email that I've used for tons of stuff

It has to be true. I mean, if you can't a propaganda division of the Syrian government, who can you trust?
