An eagle-eyed Engadget reader was surfing the Best Buy shelves when he noticed this $50 card -- and sure enough, Intel websites confirm -- that lets you download software to unlock extra threads and cache on the new Pentium G6951 processor. Hardware.info got their hands on an early sample of the chip and discovered it's actually a full 1MB of L3 cache that's enabled plus HyperThreading support, which translates to a modest but noticeable upgrade. This isn't exactly an unprecedented move, as chip companies routinely sell hardware-locked chips all the time in a process known as binning, but there they have a simpler excuse -- binned chips are typically sold with cores or cache locked because that part of their silicon turned out defective after printing. This new idea is more akin to video games that let you "download" extra weapons and features, when those features were on the disc all along. Still, it's an intriguing business model, and before you unleash your rage in comments, you should know that Intel's just testing it out on this low-end processor in a few select markets for now.[/release] So Intel's playing the 2K of Hardware? :v:
You gotta be squiddin me
It's gonna be cracked.
Goddamnit Intel.

Gee. The upgrader is software-based. It'll be cracked in, what, a week?
First of all, $50 is way to much
Intel Stimulus Package
HERE WE WILL SELL YOU THIS CHIP, THEN BUY IT'S FEATURES PLEASE goddmanit sandy bridge, overclocks above 2% break the stat interface, I dont want to pay 100$ extra for an unlocked K series. :saddowns:
Bobby Kotick is in charge of Intel, too?
If this goes forward I predict AMD getting an increase in sales.
Too fucking greedy.
This won't go forward, they're just testing things, and AMD will never overtake Intel lol
Are you fucking joking intel? Not so intelligent.
Damn, I really liked Intel too..
wow this is really stupid
They'll make a killing on this, specially if people who buy pre-builts and want a faster computer. Idiots will fall for this, the rest of us will not.
holy damn, someone's gonna write a keygen for this, making it finally possible to download more MHz.
holy damn, someone's gonna write a keygen for this, making it finally possible to download more MHz.
Intel did it on purpose, just for the heck of downloading hardware.
Next stop: www.downloadmoreram.com
Wow, that's pretty stupid. What happens if you press download?
Wow, that's pretty stupid. What happens if you press download?
You get more Ram, duh.
Goodbye Intel, nice knowing you. I'll be sticking with AMD.
Wow, that's pretty stupid. What happens if you press download?
Why don't you click and find out. :q:
Good thing I have AMD.
Good thing I have AMD.
Busted my old laptop, which is an earlier model of the one I have now, but it was superior. Had AMD guts with an ATI card. This onboard Intel shit in my new laptop is garbage. I realise that has nothing to do with Intel but it's annoying that I have a newer model and yet it's inferior.
Activision of hardware world?
Wow, that's pretty stupid. What happens if you press download?
You get ass-RAMmed.
Bah, It's only for some new pentium shit, No-one with a good mind would get a pentium over a core 2 duo/quad/i3/i5/i7
Whoa? For fucking real guise? So, I go into this store, and I buy this CPU. And it tells me for me to release the full potential of the product I just purchased; I need to buy more shit. Maybe it'll only be a few bucks... but its a practice called nickel and diming. This is just a sign of the greed that has taken place in the consumer electronics industry. First kotick then this piece of shit. Quickly guys, the economy is failing; make everyone pay for everything so we don't lose our huge salaries! [editline]1293[/editline]
So if this goes through we'll have to buy shitty AMD procs?
They're not shitty :saddowns:
