It is the first time the national side have been knocked out after just two matches, with Roy Hodgson's side beaten by Group D rivals Italy and Uruguay.
They needed Italy to win both of their remaining games to stand a chance of reaching the last 16.
But Costa Rica's defeat of the Azzurri ended England's involvement.
The England team watched Friday's match from their hotel base in Rio.
Hodgson had picked a squad with an emphasis on youth, and was hopeful they would be able to progress out of a tough group.
Costa Rica were supposed to be the weakest team in a pool containing three former World Cup winners, but the Central American side were the first to secure their place in the last 16.
Despite England's campaign starting with a 2-1 defeat by Italy, a promising performance gave them confidence for Thursday's game against Uruguay, who lost their opening match to Costa Rica.
However, Luis Suarez's two goals gave Uruguay a 2-1 victory which left Hodgson's men relying on other results.
In the aftermath of the defeat, Hodgson insisted he would not resign, and Football Association chairman Greg Dyke said his job is not under threat.
An omen from yesterday's Uruguay game.

I hope this becomes a thing in this WC
Latin American teams are on the rise, check that out.
Maybe the cup will end up in one of their hands this year.
Revoke their citizenship like the people who go on jihad.
CONCACAF hype train inbound, this is shaping up to be an awesome WC.
i saw an english fan wearing chainmail and tabard with st georges cross on it during the game. pretty dedicated fans.

it's not chainmail, it's just wool.

its meant to look like chainmail though. looks cool, we don't have anything that cool here.
I'm not especially into football so had no team allegiance. I supported Uruguay in the game simply because they make and consume one of my favourite beverages, Yerba Mate, which made me feel more connected to them than the England team.
Also they have the coolest president ever Jose Mujica and are the first country to fully legalise and implement state distribution of cannabis which, while not a stoner, I consider to be a pretty smart move. I bet the team relax hard.

Obviously, European teams can't handle the climate whereas the South American teams play in these conditions all year round.
Don't really care about the world cup, but we apparently won 3 world cups out of a total of 20 :D
Poor England :(

European teams can't handle playing in 26 C weather?
So much hype on TV in the UK surrounding the world cup (like adverts and just other random shit) and all I can do is laugh. England football team died a long time ago and we will probably never win the cup again in my life time. The communication between players is terrible and our players are absolute pussies when it comes to defending / tackling.

It's a combination of the heat and the effect of the humidity on the player's bodies. Try running 5/10km in 90 minutes in 26C heat and 70%+ humidity.

A lot of people will still watch the world cup though, the finals tend to have a huge chunk of the world watching at any one point.
I've been seeing more support for Brazil and other countries than for England :v:
More and more people seem to be realising the fact our football team is a farce

Somehow I don't think we'll be seeing that at the Qatar World Cup

The ghosts of dead muslims will rise from the dead to fight off the crusaders once again
It's the year of the underdogs.
I really couldn't care less.
We are hosting the Rugby World Cup next year though. We're not terrible at that sport.

Indeed, I don't really watch the World Cup myself, I only watched until 1/2 time of the England match yesterday and I just check the scores every now and then (I'm not even into football as well :v:)
