Researchers say they have discovered a large reservoir of melt water that sits under the Greenland ice sheet all year round.
The scientists say the water is stored in the air space between particles of ice, similar to the way that fruit juice stays liquid in a slush drink.
The aquifer, which covers an area the size of Ireland, could yield important clues to sea level rise.
The research is published in the journal, Nature Geoscience.
The melting of the Greenland ice sheet has been a significant contributor to a rise in sea levels over the past 100 years.
Once that melts we're all right snoggered.
Now they can make a water slushie. Nice.
The Earth always has a backup.
we should measure everthing in Irelands

"You'll love this house, it's got a heated pool and 2.20095501 × 10-9 Irelands of floor space."

And it also comes with an indoor bar
Good, more perfectly good water to waste!
That's a lot of freshwater
And it also comes with an indoor bar
In every room!
Put it on Ireland and see what happens.
We must drink it all.

this is a dangerous mentality
liquid water... the rarest kind

Please explain to me how exactly do you waste water. Do you like piss it into outer space? Or do you maybe imagine that when you flush your toilet it drains into the center of the Earth?

Water is wasted when it isn't cooling my PC or being used for reasons other than cleaning my Fedora collection.

If you distribute the water to widely, pollute it, or use it without care the recovery costs go up to much to make it justifiable.
I've always wondered how reporters decide which landmass or ocean, etc something is the equivalent size of. Do they just go into Wolfram, type the area in, and then use the closest comparison that it spits out or something?
pipe it to texas, problem solved

frack with it...use it in mining of any kind really, probably a dozen industrial processes, oh and open cycle nuclear reactors are my favorite
"Oh good we can forget about the water availability crises for a few more years"

not only is this dumb and overused but it doesn't even make any sense in relation to that post
No doubt Nestle or some such company will get their hands into this, tap it for free and then sell it... Sometimes I wish info like this was not found at all. Just leave it alone!

Until you destroy the backup :v:
Pipeline that shit to civilization, fresh water is THE resource to fight over for the next century and it doesn't do anybody any good if it all just dumps into the ocean.

you do know that seawater evaporates and falls as rain right

Still better than the imperial system.
the optimist in me thinks this is a great discovery and hope it gets put to good and responsible use
the snarky cynic in me wants to know why scientists are triumphantly announcing that an enormous natural ice formation is full of water
