Over 500 firefighters are combatting the blaze triggered by blasts, while dozens of residents in nearby communities have sought medical help. Multiple artillery shells keep exploding at an ammunition depot near the city of Chapaevsk, a local police spokesman told RIA. “It is still not possible to halt the self-destruction, or to enter the firing grounds,” he added, saying that the shell shards are scattering in such a large area that there is no way the fire brigade could reach and extinguish the fire. According to the Chief Directorate of the Interior Ministry for Samara Region spokesman Sergey Goldstein, there are “13 million shell units” at the ammunition depot, Interfax reports. Police have cordoned off the area. At least 6,000 people from the nearby community have been evacuated to safety, Russia's Emergencies Ministry said in a statement. 11 people have been hospitalized as a result of the blasts, a source in emergency response team told RIA. Earlier reports said that 34 people have sought medical attention in connection with the incident in Chapaevsk, according to Russian Health Ministry spokesman Oleg Salagay.
...why do they keep this in a city. 13 million shells. In a city.
Because it is Russia?
Once again liveleak to the rescue with videos http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fcd_1371582365
Those Russian kids just casually playing football in the foreground.
at least the injuries and fatalities are extremely low, given the fact 13 MILLION shells exploded in a damn city
Once again liveleak to the rescue with videos http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fcd_1371582365
[del]That first video. They're videotaping it and laughing. Then near the end the kids on the field in front keep playing football. [/del] Fuckin' Russians man.
at least the injuries and fatalities are extremely low, given the fact 13 MILLION shells exploded in a damn city
13 million shells didn't explode, but some did. If they put out the fire they might not blow up.
...why do they keep this in a city. 13 million shells. In a city.
They do close to the same in the US. In California, at least. There's a naval depot in Huntington Beach that is considered a sensitive military target.
13 million shells didn't explode, but some did. If they put out the fire they might not blow up.
ummm.....
ummm.....
They could use firefighting planes.
We have trident missiles just a mile away from my town, It's really unnerving knowing that...
Again? Oh bother. Least it was a fan favourite reprise.
We have trident missiles just a mile away from my town, It's really unnerving knowing that...
the warheads in those need to be armed before they'll explode, and only the firing mechanism can detonate them you're much more likely to be killed by someone else's nuke in a pre-emptive strike on the nuclear silo/submarine :)
it seems that the kids in syria will have to wait a little longer for their stuff
They could use firefighting planes.
Just because you put the thin wall of an aircraft between you and an uncontrollable detonation of ammunition does not mean the problem is solved. A shell hits you on the ground, you're fucked. IF it hits you in the air you're both fucked and everyone might have to deal with a water bomber crashing somewhere.
We have trident missiles just a mile away from my town, It's really unnerving knowing that...
AWE Aldermaston? Also, standard day in Russia
Surprised so few people were hurt, but i'm guessing it was built during the Cold War in anticipation of huge wartime consumption of shells and so wasn't really used much; can't really imagine peacetime artillery training burns through that many shells.
I'm sorry but how many times has something exploded in Russia in the last year? I mean we've had meteorite, I'm fairly sure there was another explosion as well and now this.
Once again liveleak to the rescue with videos http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=fcd_1371582365
it's almost scary how unphased the russians were in the first video i've noticed this with a lot of russian disaster/accident videos
