Apple plans to load the subscription music service it obtained from its acquisition of Beats into the iOS operating system powering iPhones and iPads as soon as early next year, according to the Financial Times (subscription required).
Apple and Beats leadership team after the deal was announced. The music service part of the business could see higher visibility next year.
Apple
By preloading the service -- which may not use the Beats name -- on its devices, Apple gains an edge in promoting its own offer over the competition, which includes Spotify and Rhapsody. A subscription music service would represent a new revenue stream and keeps customers locked into the Apple ecosystem.
A spokesman for Apple declined to comment on the report.
Given the high-profile nature of Apple's acquisition of Beats -- the $3 billion purchase was the biggest in the company's history -- a dedicated push to make Beats Music an integral part of Apple's hardware comes as no surprise. However, such an integration of Beats Music into the Apple mobile operating system would represent the Cupertino, Calif., company's final seal of approval on the subscription-streaming-music model.
Apple long shunned the format: Founder Steve Jobs referred to it as "bankrupt" and insisted "people want to own their music." But as the listening trends shift from purchasing music to renting through a service like Beats, the streaming format has become too important to ignore.
Attention, artists: Streaming music is the inescapable future. Embrace it
Apple could also use its TouchID fingerprint reader as an easy way to subscribe to the service, the FT said. The company has already enabled TouchID for mobile payments in stores and on select websites, as well as for in-app purchases.
While getting a service preloaded onto a device helps with consumer adoption, it doesn't guarantee success. Apple bundled iTunes Radio into its iTunes music app, but the service hasn't made a dent against Internet radio giant Pandora. And Beats Music itself only drew minimal consumer adoption as a standalone service sold exclusively through carrier partner AT&T.
Still, integrating such a high-profile service into iOS could be a good in-road for untapped consumers who represent potential first-time subscribers.
I'm assuming you have to update your phone to get this feature which serves no use to me since I am a Spotify subscriber. I am going to stay on iOS 7 for eternity.
Do not want.
"People don't want own their music"
speak for yourself, cunt

Nowhere in the article it says anything close to that but whatever floats your boat.
Also, Dr. Dre is massively rich by now, right?
My phone came with Sony Music Unlimited and I still use Spotify. Won't users be more attracted to the available music rather than "ooh it came with my phone"?
Ah yes. integrate the software that intentionally makes your phone sound worse when it's not enabled, only to make itself look better. thats a good idea.
hopefully they won't be stupid enough to take that part of it from implementations on other phones.

That's Steve Jobs' quote, yet the sum of the article is the opposite.
There are tons of iOS features I ignore already; this will be another one.

iTunes isn't going away and never will.
The article is saying that, over the past years, streaming services have gotten more and more popular as less people are buying full priced songs or albums, which is true. Apple is going to put in the Beats streaming stuff to try and compete against Spotify and the such.
Again, nowhere in the article does it say that Apple believes that all users don't want to own their music. Apple just wants to compete on an additional front.
Oh good, yet another thing to get immediately moved to the "Useless Crap" folder on my iPhone.
Newsstand will keep it company.
Doesn't iTunes already have Radio for Match subscribers anyway?

if only your homescreen and app list were two separate things like a certain other mobile os
Another update I won't be installing because iOS 8 has slowed down my iPad enough.
Just see it like this: more bloatware to remove. On the other hand, it can't be more than the applications Samsung shoves on their devices. I have deleted about 20 pieces of bloatware, including touchjizz launcher.

removable ios bloatware??
hah
Shit like this is what makes jailbreaking so desirable. Removing this stuff from the springboard and disabling it to save those precious system resources. Apple should take some pointers from android.
For all the talk about Android being ruined with bloatware, you can always just disable the app in settings and it's essentially gone. Can't do that on iOS. Can't even truly hide the icon.
That said, the one thing iOS still has going for it is being a pure experience regardless of what device or carrier you're on. If Apple keeps this up they're going to ruin their edge.

apple arent going to brand their DACs as beats or anything. they're already well known for having good audio processing
Jeez....can't wait to switch to Android, only a couple of months left before I can do so
