10k worth of SNES cartridges for preservation lost in post
A Nintendo fan's project to digitally preserve every SNES game has ended in defeat after the US Postal Service (USPS) lost a package containing 100 cartridges.
The parcel contained between $7500 and $10k worth of vintage games, which were en route to amateur archivist Byuu.
The package made the journey from Frankfurt to Byuu's home state of New Jersey, but after this was lost by the USPS. It was the second of five planned shipments of games from a European collector, who has now been left without a large chunk of their collection.
Oh I'm sure.
I've heard stories in my local area, about the post office stealing stuff.
Check on ebay and craigslist to see if they just happen to pop up.
Jesus fuck, seems like the universe hates people trying to preserve Nintendo games.
Though to be fair, if you're sending something with that much value, you should be using someone other than USPS, FedEX is probably the way to go.
A solid piece of advice is to NEVER EVER have anything shipped via USPS. They lost my friend's monitor a few months ago when he had it shipped to our apartment.

We've had birthday cards that we send to family members with money come back to us as just the front of the envelope, nothing else. I'm gonna say that yeah, they stole that shit.
are there that many games out there that arent already roms? must be pretty obscure titles.

the source goes into more detail. he was scanning the boxes and manuals in high quality to preserve them.

Old scans of most games are not perfect, because the format they used to copy them required adding some junk to the code in order to make the copies work. The whole point of the preservation project was to make perfect 1 to 1 copies of the games.
Hell, even Nintendo doesn't have perfect copies. They've been caught using these old copies of roms for their virtual console games, because the bits of code added to the old rips is easily recognizable with a hex editor.
whenever you send ANYTHING by usps, always write "to grandma" or something in crayon. use a little cousin or brother if you can. they're all fucking thieves.
They are going to be sued right?
Why is nobody shutting down this postal service if it is as terrible as it seems?
USPS lost a fucking drumset I ordered. I had to get a refund from Amazon and order it again.
A bunch of USPS people in Southern California, including two in my own city, got fired for stealing shit a few months ago :v:

pretty sure the USPS is still used for a thing or two
Used hundreds of times personally as a seller, never had a problem. Business customer as well -- never had a problem. It's regional.
By the way, for those that didn't read the article, Byuu isn't just some amateur archivist, he is the creator of the most accurate SNES emulator created: Higan.
Make note that these games were pobably CIB, which means that even if insurance covers it, it could take ages to rebuild the collection trying to find more complete copies. By then prices on these games will have gone up, meaning they are going to have to pay out of pocket to replace them.
That's also the reason it was so valuable too
Guarantee this happened because some worker realized what he was holding and it ended up in his car instead of the postal service truck.

You will never have a perfect delivery service unless you decide to rely on Armored Car companies.

It's a one in a million thing. I've sent and received thousands of packages via USPS, including very rare records and several dozen high value video games(upwards of a thousand dollars a piece for some) and not one time did the post lose the package. It's a statistical thing. Out of the millions of packages delivered daily, and billions yearly, the one that will stick out is the one that is very valuable.
As for the subject matter within, it couldn't have hurt to use a private currier service. Especially with a value near that of a car.
i guess the thing brown can do for you is also brown and is now sitting in your lap.

That would be a bit clever but it's USPS, not UPS.

They're certainly reliable for online orders here. I've made almost 50 amazon orders in the past few years as well as a few things from other sites and they've never lost anything.

I've been having great experiences with USPS shipping me delicate N-scale steam locomotives without mangling or losing them. Not permanently, anyway, I did have one package get lost but they found it and expedited it to me within 24 hours of me filing a claim on it.
Everyone loves to jab the government's mail system in their country, the USPS being no stranger to it, but let's be honest: They're no worse than UPS. Fuck Fed-Ex though. Those shitstains can't find my driveway with a satnav.

Byuu is infamous among the emulation community for his obsession with the SNES, creating Higan, the most accurate SNES emulator you can currently find. He's spent over a decade working on it, and has a reputation so solid that he's singlehandidly backed up every single USA SNES game in this fashion, with his own money.
I realize it's easy to believe that he could be lying, but he'd be wasting what he's literally called his life's work at one point.

I'm thinking he meant that the postal workers stole them, not byuu.
It'll be found.

Don't do this, cause they steal shit from kids more often than anything else. Trust me, we're talking real scumbags.
To be honest though, one of two things happened. Either it's sitting in a registry cage for some reason and was forgotten about (Which happens a lot sadly). Or it got eaten by a bulk conveyor, and is probably being pieced back together by re-wrap.

FedEx and UPS are great if you use their higher teir delivery services, such as scheduled delivery or signature pickup, with the items properly ensured ofc.
Find the person who did it and make an example of them. Tampering with the mail is a federal crime. Let them enjoy their 5 years per count.

My mistake, I've seen comments on articles about it accusing him of taking the games and stealing them for his own profit so I've seen it before
