I'm a local patriot of sorts, and I'm always wanting to support local bands by listening to them/telling other people about them. So, I'm going to post about some artists from where I live: Paul Cusick was the guitarist from the band Big Big Train who recently stepped out from behind his guitar and recorded a solo progressive rock album, called Focal Point: Described as a cross between Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree with a little Nine Inch Nails thrown in for good measure, the album is a pretty sweet journey through the life of Cusick (with his family providing backing vocals). He plays every instrument on his album apart from drums. I recommend it to all Prog fans. ----- Elliot Minor are a symphonic pop-punk band formed in 2005. Their two albums ("Elliot Minor" and "Solaris") are very musically interesting, utilising various classical instruments. Favourites of mine are "Parallel Worlds" and "The White One Is Evil", both from their first album. Last week the keyboardist Ali announced he is leaving the band after they've played the last few dates on their tour. Which is a shame because he had a good sense of humour. :smith: ----- Sewing Operation are a three-piece alternative rock band who recently achieved success in local battle-of-the-bands competitions and will soon be supporting "Hot Fudge" at their album launch gig. I be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the singer, but I don't mind the sound of the guitar. ----- Amorr is a solo acoustic guitarist and singer. In all honesty, this is about as independent as you can get: Demo tracks, no gigs or anything. I happen to know this girl and I can tell you now her singing voice is nothing like her speaking voice. And, although this isn't usually the stuff I would listen to, the songs she's made have quite a relaxing sound. 5 songs can be downloaded off the Last.FM page, so give them a listen. ----- Well, I've done my bit for my local music scene, so why not post a bit about little-known bands from your area? And when the artists you post about become international superstars, you can refer back to this thread and say "I knew them before they were big :smug:"
A Torn Mind are a melodic prog rock band from Edinburgh, most of them used to go to my college, really cool bunch of guys. Their EP has been out a couple of months, and it's still in my car. http://www.atornmind.com/ http://www.myspace.com/atornmindband http://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Torn-Mind/113394599036 Give these guys a listen if you like Genesis, Dream Theater, Thrice, Mars Volta etc. There are a lot of bands from Edinburgh, A Torn Mind are the main band I listen to from the local area, but yeah, there are lots.
Lots of metal bands in my town! Revengers are a Tacoma based band(close enough to Seattle). I actually saw them at Hempfest. They have a really cool bassist and they are really awesome live. I would suggest anyone in Seattle/Tacoma to see them at any opportunity. http://www.myspace.com/revengersmusic I like Fenced in Centipede and Stonehenge. Super Geek League is an...interesting band. They definitely know how to put on a show. This is another band I saw at Hempfest. They got an interesting get-up and they have dancers(always a plus). Another band I would suggest going to see at least for the experience. http://www.myspace.com/supergeekleague They are a more visual band so I suggest watching a video. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=4656096
Well there is only one band from my actual hometown, and that's Die Kreuzen.(Yes, I know there were other bands from Milwaukee, but I live in the Suburbs.) http://www.last.fm/music/Die+Kreuzen Two of the members were born in my hometown. And then there are people who aren't that famous. Gavin Colahan went my High School. He kind of sounds like Jack Johnson. http://www.myspace.com/gcolahan
There's Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays and El Torpedo, The Stanfields, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, Black Moor, Ghost Bees from my city. There's probably more but I have no idea who'd be known outside of the province, or even if half of the aforementioned are familiar at all [editline]10:23PM[/editline] Oh, and Holy Fuck started off in Yarmouth before moving to Toronto, and they were on the longlist for this year's Polaris Music Prize
Dave Matthews Band: Yeah, they're awesome.
Just a bunch of faggy christian metalcore bands around here
I only know one band in my city, that would be Von Sargeth. However I have never heard anything from them, and just seen them listed. However I'll post bands from the greater Seattle area. As well I'm going to also add bands from Olympia. Mostly because they are some of my favorite bands in my state. I'm gonna skip most of the grunge, since that is a given. The only band I can think of that started on Long Island is Dream Theater. And they're pretty big by now. And that is fucking awesome, knowing I live no more than 30 minutes away from two of my three favorite band members :v:
Sadly, most bands from Western Canada and Vancouver aren't at all great. We have Marianas Trench, Hedley, Hot Hot Heat, and Nickelback. Many people from the UK, Mainland Europe, Asia, and the States probably wouldn't even have heard of these guys, with the exception of Nickelback. Marianas Trench - All to Myself Hedley - Cha-Ching Hot Hot Heat - No, Not Now. Nickelback - RockStar
Sydney - -Philidelphia Grand Jury -Art Vs. Science There are more but meh.

Mostly crappy hardcore around here, but there are a few good bands: Cactus Collective are a jazz/funk band with experimental influences, really good. Mostly made up of uni students and others just out of school, the drummer, pianist and bassist all went to my school, which is renowned for its music and especially jazz programs, they are awesome. http://www.myspace.com/cactuscollective Midnight Martini is another jazz/funk band, I know a couple of these guys, they're good. http://www.myspace.com/cactuscollective Saeturnum are a Progressive death/doom metal band who take influence from bands like Opeth and Daylight Dies. The bassist from my band knows them personally, they are really good. http://www.myspace.com/saeturnum And what would this be without a bit of shameless self promotion? Artificial Night, my band. We play Progressive rock with some metal leanings. Main influences are Porcupine Tree and Opeth. Hoping to have our first Opeth-esque prog death song finished and demoed soon. www.myspace.com/artificialnight
Joe Boyd is an electronic/ acoustic singer/songwriter who attended my college. He's pretty underground still, but is definitely good http://www.myspace.com/jboydmusic
The Midnight Beast. Osm. :D
Bump for more music Saw these 4 bands live on Friday, was a pretty awesome experience: Mitzi's Revenge Post-Hardcore, kinda shouty but fun live Drowned In Flames METAAAAAAAAL. The bassist jumped down from the stage and played in the crowd. Awesome. Teen Zu Kickass cross-breed of NWOBHM/Thrash. From my school. Acid Majesty Post-hardcore but not as in-your-face as Mitzi's Revenge. Mostly clean vocals, always a plus. Mitzi's Revenge and Acid Majesty were handing out EPs (AM's came in really cool homemade packaging).
Carbon Leaf is another one from my area. They made it fairly big and had a few hits: Life Less Ordinary: What About Everything?:
