Saudi Arabia, which is leading a three-week-old air campaign against Houthi fighters in Yemen, has announced $274m in humanitarian aid for the Arabian Peninsula nation.
The pledge, which the official SPA news agency said on Saturday was ordered by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, followed a UN appeal for $274m to provide emergency assistance to the millions affected by the conflict.
"Ordinary families are struggling to access healthcare, water, food and fuel - basic requirements for their survival," Johannes Van Der Klaauw, the UN humanitarian coordinator, said on Friday.
The World Health Organisation, in a new toll, says 767 people have died in Yemen's war since March 19 and more than 2,900 have been wounded. The majority are civilians.
The UN says thousands of families have fled their homes due to the war, which has also killed six Saudi security officers in border skirmishes.
Brigadier-General Ahmed al-Assiri, the Saudi-led coalition's spokesperson, said on Friday in Riyadh that "from this afternoon we have started operations in Taez".
He said there had been 100 sorties in Yemen on Thursday, indicating there is no end in sight to the operation.
"This works needs patience, persistence and precision," he said.
"We are not in a hurry ... We have the time and we have the capabilities."
Could it be that they are doing so to make themselves look like the good guys? Since they are the main guys doing the bombings after all
Holy shit what?
A nation actually feeling humanitarian responsibility for it's military operations, Saudi Arabia out of all the places?
Colour me pleasantly surprised.

That's more than likely.
Plus the president of Yemen has fled to Saudi Arabia so it would look pretty bad to not help a little with him there.

Well if they really do deliver the aid then the reason for it is less important than that it makes it there.

You don't actually believe they're doing this out of the kindness of their heart do you?

Motive is always important.

Well for some people there this means eating six days a week instead of five, so I don't think they'd really care who's sending them help.

Yeah and it's obviously awesome that they're gonna be getting food but that doesn't mean that Saudi Arabia is the good guy.

... okay? Did anyone in this thread actually make a direct positive comment about Saudi Arabia? Because Awesomecaek's posts still implies Saudi Arabia are responsible for the damage that has caused Yemen to require humanitarian aid.

There isn't fucking good guys and bad guys in international relations of countries, get this fucking elementary school mentality (which is albeit sadly common among the public) out of your goddamn head.
Saudi Arabia isn't an absolutist autocracy and even if it were, even the most sovereign and uncontested leaders never could do anything they wanted, they had some degree of moderation from below, and this moderation is a complex and complicated matter, often involving thousands of invested people. If you add international relations and connections into it, it should be completely clear to anybody with basic logical thinking that going "OH THESE ARE THE GOOD GUYS AND THESE ARE THE BAD GUYS".
Greece isn't land of lazy beggars, Russia nor Israel isn't the embodiment of evil, America is more than a self righteous world police. These countries, just alike their governments, are very complex and diverse systems and once you degrade any single country to "bad guys", you lose all hindsight and perspective you could ever have.
PR is important I suppose

That's one of those posts you can repeat a million times in SH and still most people completely ignore it, which is pretty fucking sad.
It's in Saudi Arabia's best interest to re-stabilize Yemen. Their hegemony is challenged by both the Houthi's and AQAP.

i mean there's really no good/bad guys in this conflict, saudi arabia does not want an iraq style clusterfuck civil war on their southern boarder, not when they have one on their eastern one
