• Congress makes protesting a felony
A bill passed Monday in the US House of Representatives and Thursday in the Senate would make it a felony—a serious criminal offense punishable by lengthy terms of incarceration—to participate in many forms of protest associated with the Occupy Wall Street protests of last year. Several commentators have dubbed it the “anti-Occupy” law, but its implications are far broader. The bill—H.R. 347, or the “Federal Restricted Buildings and Grounds Improvement Act of 2011”—was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate, while only Ron Paul and two other Republicans voted against the bill in the House of Representatives (the bill passed 388-3). Not a single Democratic politician voted against the bill. The virtually unanimous passage of H.R. 347 starkly exposes the fact that, despite all the posturing, the Democrats and the Republicans stand shoulder to shoulder with the corporate and financial oligarchy, which regarded last year’s popular protests against social inequality with a mixture of fear and hostility. Among the central provisions of H.R. 347 is a section that would make it a criminal offense to “enter or remain in” an area designated as “restricted.” The bill defines the areas that qualify as “restricted” in extremely vague and broad terms. Restricted areas can include “a building or grounds where the President or other person protected by the Secret Service is or will be temporarily visiting” and “a building or grounds so restricted in conjunction with an event designated as a special event of national significance.” Edit: This article is from the World Socialist Web Site, so this is not an unbiased source. The bill, however, does exist and was passed. The language in the article may be biased, but the issue remains the same.
Apparently, this is the response Congress has given to the Occupy movement. Personally, I'm not a fan of vaguely worded legislation, but I figured this would spark some interesting discussion. What it means is you aren't allowed to camp long periods of time in area's that prohibit it which was the problem with the Occupy protests.
not really sure how much i can trust 'world socialist web site' as a news source, i guess i'll have to wait for this to appear in something a little more well known but if it's true, the beginning of the very first corporate police state is at hand
Congress did not make protesting a felony.
I'm ready when you are to protest this.
Oh wow, so hilarious. Want to protest for prolonged amount of time? Heh go protest in a prison cell. People should protest this law.
God fuck congress with a 20 sided dildo. It kills me that congress is still the same even after the ~10% approval rating. I know the title is sensationalist , but the fact that they pass laws that affect people and no one is there to question it pisses me off.
Congress pushing out extremely vague bills with serious punishments? Nothing new here

I probably should have put that in the OP, but this was just something I came across. It'll be interesting to see how other news sources (CNN, Fox, etc.) cover this, if at all.
Sensationalist headlines at its best
retarded sensationalist headlining once again
Seems like this is about stopping occupy from interfering in elections. That kind of shit is going to happen anyway, thankfully. We should all expect the state to crack down on occupy and other manifestations of dissenting spontaneity. They're not on our side, they want to manage us.
Oh really now?
Banning sit-in protests? Oh, that's not gonna be received too favourably.
thats all there is to it
You didnt even read the article.
what? I didn't post that.
Dumbest post of the year 2012
The occupy movements have already faded out of media publicity. They will hardly change anything now.

Where is bad reading when you need it?
I did, where am I wrong?
I did, where am I wrong?
maybe I should read more but I know you can still protest in areas that allow it, so it's not really that bad
maybe I should read more but I know you can still protest in areas that allow it, so it's not really that bad
Which is retarded because they could go and say "this area no longer allows protesting, go to jail" The whole point of a protest is to annoy the government. If they can simply outlaw protesting in places they don't want to, what's the point? Instead of accepting more laws to stop protests, government should instead listen to protesters, but noo that is too good to be true.
-snip, I suck at reading, thanks OP for sensationalism-
maybe I should read more but I know you can still protest in areas that allow it, so it's not really that bad
The idea of protest and strikes is disrupting an industry or a society to force those in power to give what you want. Edit: When you are forced to go on strike only on the employers terms, the strike kinda loses its edge.
