Yes, the hard drives are processing the actual vocals and playing them in real time.

Fuck man, I miss portal.
How the fuck do you use a hard drive as a speaker.
How the fuck do you use a hard drive as a speaker.
A speaker is fundamentally a coil of wire and a magnet. Modern hard drives have the same elements, they are used to drive the actuator. It's a thing called a voice coil motor. Just hook an amplified signal into the coils and you have a speaker. It usually sounds like total ass with messy signals, but they generally work well with isolated tracks and pure signals like tones, which is what I usually use them for.

Well then go and install it.
So, first of all, I just want to say, it's really impressive what you do.
That being said, ow. My ears. :v:
Two things absolutely blow my mind in terms of technology and thats speakers and hard drives. Now this is the magnum opus of mind fucks and I should read a book on these.

I have already finished it like 3 times, I need more content.

Well we all do, but I lost hope for that a looooong time ago.

I think the mixing was a bit off on this one :v:
That hard drive speaker is super impressive tho. Also works really well for GLaDOS's robot voice.

Yeah any signal I pass to the hard drives is output with insanely high treble because their coils are too small, was really difficult to strike a good balance with everything. I could have lowered the treble even more than I did in post but then it wouldn't be as clear.
There's something so batshit insane about machines singing a song sung by a robot. It's just a complete mindfuck.
It's amazing how far people took this concept. I just wonder if there is any way to make the higher notes sound bette (i.e. in still alive).

Full-size stepper motors like the ones in scanners or CNC machines are much more capable of higher notes. The only downside to using those is you need a dedicated driver for each one. The benefit of the floppies is they already have a controller integrated into them which is easy to interface with.
The real downside to the floppies is each motor movement drives the head. On super high notes it just rams the head back and forth and you don't hear the note at all. I'm looking into changing that around by manually disconnected the heads. That way I can just put more floppies on high notes and have the actual note come through instead of plastic ramming against metal.
