The WikiLeaks founder took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London on June 19 after losing his appeal against extradition to Sweden where he is wanted over allegations of sexual offences.
After formally applying for political asylum, a decision was due this week. In the meantime, a warrant for his arrest for breaching his bail conditions means he is likely to be rearrested if he steps outside the embassy.
According to an official close to the government, Correa has already decided to approve Assange's application.
"Ecuador will grant asylum to Julian Assange," a source told the Guardian.
"We see Assange's request as a humanitarian issue. The contact between the Ecuadorean government and WikiLeaks goes back to May 2011, when we became the first country to see the leaked US embassy cables completely declassified
"It is clear that when Julian entered the embassy there was already some sort of deal. We see in his work a parallel with our struggle for national sovereignty and the democratisation of international relations."
There had been speculation Correa's government would be likely to allow Assange into the country to improve the country's image and boost its record on free speech.
However, officials later stressed a decision had not been made.
A spokesman for the Ecuadorian government said: "No decision has been made. The President made clear in an interview yesterday that he was meeting with officials tomorrow, including the Government's legal team, to assess the application by Mr Assange in the context of domestic Ecuadorian law and international human rights protocols.
"Reports that a decision has been reached are premature and it seems the result of over enthusiastic journalists short on facts but high on speculation."
Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said ministers were considering how Assange, 41, might travel to Ecuador.
"Beyond the international treaties, the right to asylum, and the autonomy or sovereignty, the national government has to take a decision of this nature, we have to look at what will happen next," he said before an event in the highland city of Ambato.
"It's not only about whether to grant the asylum, because for Mr Assange to leave England he should have a safe pass from the British [government]. Will that be possible? That's an issue we have to take into account."
He added Assange had applied for asylum on the grounds he was being politically prosecuted and will eventually be extradited to the US.
"We're analysing the weight, the veracity of that information," Patino said.
Assange has not been charged with any offence in Sweden or in the United States.
Prosecutors in Sweden want to question him about allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two WikiLeaks supporters in 2010. Assange says he had consensual sex with the women.
It's interesting how Assange seems to be one step ahead of the game. Every time he is able to be arrested, he somehow delays it. I figure he and his lawyers expected all of these steps in advance, but I wonder if there's a long term plan.
Regardless, if he manages to fully achieve the asylum he seeks, hopefully he'll be able to continue his work.
Wow, really?! How did he-
fucking ecuador where the fuck is that
Right north of Russia but south of Australia bordering Japan, the US, New Zealand and South Africa.

The Earth spins around so much you could easily be disoriented.
Even if he is granted asylum, he has to get out first. That would require him coming out of the embasy onto British soil/airspace, where he could be arrested.

I'm sorry for being so ignorant about this whole situation, but why is this person a good guy? To me it seems like all he did was release info about people who needed new identities and such. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, but I haven't seen what he's done that's good.

He released stuff the governements want to hide from the people. And it all depends on the point of view, either you believe the people governing us should tell their citizen everything because they're representing them, or you believe it should keep things secrets for the greater good (or sadly in this case, their interest).
I believe truth is the most important thing a citizen may be given by his governement, and that's exactly what Assange gave us. A tiny bit of truth.

Alright, thanks. I'll look around for more detailed info on him before saying what I think, but from what you say, he's a pretty good guy.
Why do I have the strangest feeling that the US will declare war with Equator or send the CIA in for a snatch and grab?
But will you remember where the equator is?
Remember where what is?

War, doubtful. Snatch and grab, plausible.

Its not a news website, they don't write stories nor are they the ones who make claims so there can't be any bias at all. The only "bias" that exists is the witty buttons on the bottom, but those are for fun and is not part of the facts.
They just link to reputable sources exhibiting Wikileak's leaks, nothing more.
