The country's health minister went to Sicily on Monday to deliver a personal apology to the mother. Laura Salpietro, 30, had to have her uterus removed and her son Antonio suffered heart problems and possible brain damage following his birth on Thursday in Messina's public hospital. Her husband Matteo Molonia said the doctors disagreed about whether to perform a caesarean section and came to blows while she was in labour. He said the fight delayed the section by over an hour, leading to complications for mother and son. One of the doctors was Mrs Salpietro's private gynaecologist who cared for her during her pregnancy while the other was the doctor on duty at the hospital. Prosecutors have placed five doctors under investigation, and Health Minister Ferruccio Fazio said after speaking to Mrs Salpietro on Monday: "I tried to give her words of hope, and above all I tried to tell her that the government was with her and her family at this time." The incident was the latest evidence of medical mishaps frequently reported in southern Italian hospitals. It also cast a fresh spotlight on their unusually high caesarian rates: Some 38% of all births in Italy are done by section, more than twice the 15% recommended by the World Health Organisation. In Sicily, however, the average is 52% while Campania - the southern mainland region that includes Naples - it reaches 60%.
Trained medical professionals, yeah right.
Thats fucking retarded, medical professionals my ass.
What can I say besides "It's a tragedy"? At least they were arguing about an important issue, but they shouldn't have let themselves brawl.
One of the doctors was her gynaecologist? A male gynaecologist? Worst career choice ever. You know how many unhealthy, infected vajayjays you'd have to look at every day?
Sue for unlimited money. @lil_n00blett it's like this in every medical jobs what the fuck are you on about

I'm sure there has to be a rule on which doctor has the final say on treatment. That's the part I don't understand, why fight over a disagreement when someone outranks you?
The doctor on duty has the final say. Fuck the gynecologist.
": Some 38% of all births in Italy are done by section, more than twice the 15% recommended by the World Health Organisation." Can someone tell me why they have a recommended percentage for this?

If you think your procedure is better for them, argue it regardless of rank. Just know when to step down and don't get into a fight in front of her. During delivery. With another doctor.
So wait the husband was fighting with the doctor?
No uterus, no caesarean section, final destination!
Goddammit Belgium.
what's with the funny ratings? I bet every single fucking one of you 20$ that if the baby was replaced with "DDAWWWWWWWWW CUTE PUPPY LAWLS" there would be no funny ratings at all.

Cat-fight
Favaculo medici
If you think people take that job so they can have a peek at everyone then you need to grow up.
when you think about it, it is a rather odd career choice however "son, what do you want to be when you grow up?" "i wanna be a gynecologist" granted, at a young age anyone would probably say "doctor" as a general term, but where does anyone make the leap to specialize in gynecology?

This happened in my city. In the same hospital where my aunt was almost killed because the doctors didn't close the wounds probably. I hope I never get hurt.
": Some 38% of all births in Italy are done by section, more than twice the 15% recommended by the World Health Organisation." Can someone tell me why they have a recommended percentage for this?
Probably because some are just unavoidable.
This is disgusting.
