Chex Quest, the total conversion Doom mod designed to sell Chex cereal back in the mid-90s, is a surprisingly enduring curio among Doom fans. Not only did it spawn a sequel, but a third instalment was created in ZDoom in 2008 to sate the series' still-existent fanbase. Evan wrote about Chex Quest a while back, claiming it to be "the most successful advergame ever". Given that it still has an active fan community, he's probably right.
To celebrate the game's 20th anniversary, Zam spoke to the game's artist Charles Jacobi. It's an interesting chat, even if you're not a Chex fanatic, but most interesting is that Jacobi is currently working on a Chex Quest HD remake in Unreal Engine 4.
Asked whether he'd ever consider making a fourth instalment, Jacobi said he'd opted to remake the original. "I've always kind of wondered about like 'Well, what would it be like if I just did a remake of the first one, but with a modern game engine?' And at my professional job, I use the new Unreal, Unreal 4, and I love it. It's a really powerful tool set, especially for content people...I don't necessarily need to be a programmer and I can build lots of functionality with it. So I've started building, basically, a high-def remake of the first one."
I played Chex Quest before I played DOOM.
Can we get that old nerf game too?

Arena blast? Man, the memories...
Holy shit, not only did this guy do the original conversion, he also made a third level pack in 2008! I don't know why he would spend all this time on this, but god bless him.
This game actually terrified me as a child.
This has been known about for a while, actually. He was going to do a kickstarter before he remembered "oh yeah chex is a brand isn't it."
And yeah, Chex Quest 3 is a thing he made too. It's uh, harder than you'd expect.

stolen from LMAO or the Doom thread I forget which.
I played the living hell out of this game when I was younger.
I think it was pretty much my first ever computer game
Oh shit son!
My cousins and I loved this game back in the day!
I remember we played it until my parents (or was it my aunt?) threw it away because she thought it was way too violent. ("it's got a thing in it that's like a gun!")
Anyways I remember finding it again online a couple years ago and playing it again. Was pretty interesting reliving that childhood moment. I actually was considering trying to get some folks together to remake it in Source but it never happened.
Considering the Unreal engine's origins, though, I think it's a better fit for a remake of Chex Quest.
Now the only thing I'm wondering is, will they recreate the cinematics with modern graphics? Plus, the ending cutscene in the original wasn't animated, I hope they'll animate it this time instead of going the slideshow route.

EDIT: I also really want them to remake the music. I wanna hear this with modern synthetic orchestra:

Got the portable version of this running on our school PCs and used it to load stock doom wads, was the best class i ever failed
Wow. I somehow completely forgot this even existed. I guess it really must have left an impression on a lot of people.
