Sounds like horse manure to me.
If they keep that top down camera view, they are severely limiting the kind of experiences they promise. Why bother mapping out the entire world if you can't view it first hand in first or even third person?
My prediction would be lack of funds/manpower before they can "map the world"
It sounded amazing, until they showed its going to be top down. I was severely disapppointed. I hope they change this.
I might be wrong on how they're going about it but it seems like they're
crowd funding for developing the prealpha first without a set funding goal, then once the game with map one aka brick1 is in it's beta stage they'll go to indiegogo or kickstarter for the big development phase that will add more maps to the initial release, unless just brick1 is at release, then over time scan more and more depending on funding.
I don't know what they are going to do about the cities, not only it's a difficulty in scanning them but also cities change more noticeably then natural landscape.
If they plan to scan the world, they better release their data for everyone else to use. I can imagine more than game developers benefiting from such data.

They could even sell the info for funding for the game since the idea behind the game sounds cool. Even though its another survival game.

I think it has to do with that if they did make it first person or something, I think that would end disasturously. Like, severe lag and slowdown, all that jazz.

Having it top-down also makes it feasible since they don't have to perfectly correct every single little bit of geometry scanned from the ENTIRE world.

you can obtain height maps from topdown images depending on the lens, getting shadows over hills and mountains at sunset is sexy as hell. But you can still screw up on taking bad images.
How many times would you have to do a mapping session to map out the world 1square KM at a time?
Mapping the world by drones
I guess they better plan on investing in a global hawk then.

The surface area of the entire planet is around 500 million square kilometers, so yeah.
Now imagine a way for you to play the game. What's the delivery method? Retail, like, 100 DVDs, 50 Blue-Rays? Digital, downloading terrabytes of data?
That's garbage guys. Investment-magnet with no pay-off.
Hey let's scan the world and then show it from the worst camera angle possible. I closed the video then and there, not interested in this gimmick.

ReROLL is the most uncreative name for a game too.

Or you know, stream that shit. You don't need the entire fucking world to run around your city.
Cool concept, too bad it's run down with shady details. No way that they'll be able to deliver if they don't even have a proper budget to work with.
Good luck, you'll need it.

So when you move out of one area you begin downloading another one? I'm not sure if that's comfortable, and you'll still have to download large amounts of data every time. Textures, geometry, meshes etc.

It's not THAT big.
I think a detailed enough earth for a RTS would be 100~150gb. Still a lot, but whatever. 2gb was big as hell one day.

If they even did one square kilometer every second, it would still take over 15 years for this project to be completed.
it won't ever happen. this is ridiculous.
From the never-fucking-happening department - morons seriously consider mapping out the entire planet with small fucking drones.
Google has mapped out 40% of the roads on this planet, last time I checked. It's technologically impossible to scan our entire planet within the next decade, and it's legally impossible to scan our entire planet for even longer, because of no-fly zones.
Scope of this game is absurdly big - it's a cool concept but it will either never be finished, or be extremely unpolished because of how little detail they can put into anything.
It's either going to be as empty as the fuel map, or have drops merged into walls.
I didn't hear them say anything about the game being topdown, so i just think they view was the easiest way to show a mock-up.
