Aircraft Carrier Wasn’t Sailing to Deter North Korea, as U.S. Suggested
WASHINGTON — Just over a week ago, the White House declared that ordering an American aircraft carrier into the Sea of Japan would send a powerful deterrent signal to North Korea and give President Trump more options in responding to the North’s provocative behavior. “We’re sending an armada,” Mr. Trump said to Fox News last Tuesday afternoon.
The problem was that the carrier, the Carl Vinson, and the three other warships in its strike force were that very moment sailing in the opposite direction, to take part in joint exercises with the Australian Navy in the Indian Ocean, 3,500 miles southwest of the Korean Peninsula.
White House officials said Tuesday that they had been relying on guidance from the Defense Department. Officials there described a glitch-ridden sequence of events, from an ill-timed announcement of the deployment by the military’s Pacific Command to a partially erroneous explanation by the defense secretary, Jim Mattis — all of which perpetuated the false narrative that a flotilla was racing toward the waters off North Korea.
It is heading there now though, but it wasn't when it was originally reported.
What I'm getting from the article is there was confusion between the Defence Department and the White House reports.
All this escalation from a misinterpretation..

So, there's no aircraft carrier going to the Nork's doorstep?
I thought Donald Trump said they were though

Not the media
I'm going out on a limb and saying media over sensationalization for views played a role in this mess

No there is. Read the article.
The carrier task force originally reported to going to the Sea of Japan wasn't actually going there when it was reported, it was actually going to Australia first before going to the Sea of Japan. Now it is finally going there.

So the news story here is that they didn't cancel the planned and known Australian exercise? The carrier is still going to North Korea. It will be there next week.

We knew it was going to Australia the whole time. I think people were under the impression that the group had turned around immediately. Instead it seems they did the Aussie thing first and now are heading up.
tldr, trump lied, the WH made up stuff to cover, the state department then picked it up followed by the cabinet meanwhile the carrier taskforce is sitting in the indian ocean wondering what the hell is going on.

That isn't what the article says. Well not exactly.
This is a huge problem. The administration lied to both Japan and South Korea and caused a huge amount of disturbance in the region because of it. Fucking embarrassing

No one ever asks what the South Koreans think about all this. They don't give a shit about NK making threats. They are way more concerned with the upcoming election.

Makes sense, they have to try and make sure this one isnt a faux-illuminati puppet
This could've been purposeful misinformation to distract North Korea or it could've been Trump and his WH Staff of Buffoons being stupid. Probably the latter.

The more I hear from South Koreans on places like 8chan and on random games I play on with a few, they have people literally wheeling around guillotines to make a point that they are willing to go full-on French Revolution if it happens again.
