It is heading there now though, but it wasn't when it was originally reported. What I'm getting from the article is there was confusion between the Defence Department and the White House reports.

The carrier task force originally reported to going to the Sea of Japan wasn't actually going there when it was reported, it was actually going to Australia first before going to the Sea of Japan. Instead it seems they did the Aussie thing first and now are heading up.

tldr, trump lied, the WH made up stuff to cover, the state department then picked it up followed by the cabinet meanwhile the carrier taskforce is sitting in the indian ocean wondering what the hell is going on.

This is a huge problem. The administration lied to both Japan and South Korea and caused a huge amount of disturbance in the region because of it. Fucking embarrassing
