News stations are not about what people want to see, its about what YOU want people to see. Keeping people on edge is always better than having people calm and feeling secure. You can then sell security to fearful people, calm and secure people would not buy fear as easily.

Not exactly. People are interested in events that may affect them, directly or indirectly. Most of such events are the result of unforeseen or unpredictable outcomes, which are bad in the wide sense.
