Johnson will take over the core film franchise, and he’ll get started quickly and this will be his preoccupation for quite awhile. Johnson made his directing debut on the respected indie Brick, and then jumped to mainstream science fiction by writing and directing Looper, an inventive time travel thriller that starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. It would be hard to imagine him taking on a higher profile challenge than two consecutive Star Wars films. I’ll tell you more when I know it. Johnson is repped by CAA.
Deadline
I liked Looper a lot actually. Color me interested.

Ram Bergman will produce Episode VIII. Johnson has directed three feature films. His directorial debut, 2005's Brick, won the Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. He followed that up with 2008's Brothers Bloom and 2012's time-jumping, sci-fi action-drama Looper, starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
looper was good as hell this could be interesting
Star wars needs to end on X. 9 is just too damn annoying
Brick and Looper were both excellent movies.
He also directed three episodes of Breaking Bad: "Fly," "Fifty-One," and "Ozymandias."
i need to watch looper but those 3 breaking bad eps were amazin
'Fly' was hardly amazing. Fifty-One and Ozymandias certainly were, though.
Fly was a fantaaaastic episode but this isn't the breaking bad thread so I won't go into it That being said, super stoked that Star Wars might get good again

Man, this star wars series is looking to have a bright future! I am a fan of the multiple directors for the sequels idea, just like the original series!
He also directed three episodes of Breaking Bad: "Fly," "Fifty-One," and "Ozymandias."
Expectations just rose 2000%
This news makes me so fucking happy. I fucking love Rian Johnson, and now I'm very much interested in this new Star Wars trilogy.
Man, this star wars series is looking to have a bright future! If the first one sucks we're not condemned to know we'll eventually have to endure 2 shitty sequels.
I wasn't the biggest fan of looper but those breaking bad episodes were some of the more memorable ones so I'm cautiously optimistic
Still need to see Brick, but fuck, Looper was so gosh darn great. One of my favorite movies in recent years.
