• US Army Sends Strykers, Air Defense Radar to Mexican Border
Members of Congress grumbled when the Obama administration pulled 1,200 National Guard soldiers off of the U.S. / Mexican border in February, with Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) complaining that “it defies logic that we would remove the National Guard from the border when the border is not secure . . . if anything, we need more National Guard troops.”Well, it looks like the Pentagon wants to do Poe one better. Beginning in February, the U.S. Army quietly deployed part of a Stryker brigade and an air defense unit to the Mexican border to assist local law enforcement and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Dubbed Operation Nimbus II, the deployment featured 500 soldiers from the 6th Sqdn., 1st Calvary Regiment, 1st Armored Div. (Stryker) from Ft. Bliss, Texas; and E Battery, 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Regiment from Ft. Hood, Texas.
http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/blogs/defense/index.jsp?plckController=Blog&plckBlogPage=BlogViewPost&newspaperUserId=27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7&plckPostId=Blog%3a27ec4a53-dcc8-42d0-bd3a-01329aef79a7Post%3ae9f1df29-ea7b-4225-8a87-eb9eef0e61cb&plckScript=blogScript&plckElementId=blogDest Why the fuck do you need these at the border? Invade Mexico?
I'll bet you 20 bucks this is related to the "drug war"
Yeah it's probably something to do with that valiant drug war/catastrophic failure.
I still don't get why the pulled the Guard off the border. Border security can't handle the amount of illegal immigrants and the cartels are moving vast amounts of products through there. Weird that they'd send a regular army Stryker brigade though.
DUN DUN DUN Here we go gentlemen
Why the fuck do you need these at the border? Invade Mexico?
It answers your question in the source, additionally they explain it’s for training and this is a way to train the units while giving needed help to the U.S. border patrol. It’s a win-win in my book.
the units are equipped with the Boeing-made Avenger Air Defense Systems (sans rockets) and Sentinel air defense radar systems, made by ThalesRaytheonSystems. The solders were sent to the Tucson, Arizona and El Paso, Texas, sectors “to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to the Border Patrol,” Copeland says. He was also quick to point out that the soldiers don’t have the power of arrest, but can only report what they see to CBP or local law enforcement, who will then act. The Sentinel system is being deployed in an attempt to track the drug-laden light aircraft that Mexican cartels have been flying over the border in recent years.
I'm okay with this. Would rather have them deployed on our actual borders than in some country thousands of miles away. Not to mention with cartel violence at an all time high.
The Mexican army fights the cartel on their side, why isn't it logical that the US would fight it on their side with their army?
The Mexican army fights the cartel on their side, why isn't it logical that the US would fight it on their side with their army?
I imagine with how the cartels are in Mexico that to do the same in America would end up being open war between the two with a lot of innocent civilians being killed which nobody wants. [editline]31st March 2012[/editline] Besides they'll always be able to get drugs through and all this will do is increase their profits by pushing up prices.

You'll often read news stories about them hacking up bloggers or people who speak out against them.
i can see the explosions from my house
there already are dozens of innocents being killed every day in mexico by the cartels. Some of the cartel agents cross the border to do their shit. It's not exactly a nice time to live in a rural area near the border.
I am completely for the militarization of our southern border. The situation in Mexico is a complete and total clusterfuck, and we need to do everything we can to prevent it from spilling over into the U.S.
Is this because they found UAV's packing drugs flying across the border?
Is this because they found UAV's packing drugs flying across the border?
That's fucking ingenious, and that's also why you won't stop the cartels from turning a profit.
Is this because they found UAV's packing drugs flying across the border?
That and they're using manned ultralights too. We really need more National Guard presence on the boarder though, if only to discourage American militias doing the job of the National Guard when they aren't there.
I have heard that the American border is shit. Is it true that the walls are not barbed at all? Just sticks in the ground?
I have heard that the American border is shit. Is it true that the walls are not barbed at all? Just sticks in the ground?
Depends on what part of the border you go to. Some are just chain link fencing while others are steel barriers.
they forget to mention that the avenger also has a M3P .50 cal machine gun, as well as rockets though they'll probably keep that unloaded if they're not loading rockets anyways.
they forget to mention that the avenger also has a M3P .50 cal machine gun, as well as rockets though they'll probably keep that unloaded if they're not loading rockets anyways.
From what the articles saying it seems like it's just for training and border survaillence, with the actual border duties still being done by border patrols and local police.
Yeah, not all Strykers are armed, they're pretty modular vehicles. The picture in the OP if that is one of the vehicles they're using on the boarder could just have an IR camera on it or something.
From what the articles saying it seems like it's just for training and border survaillence, with the actual border duties still being done by border patrols and local police.
yeah they're just going to be using the radar assets.
Damn pesky RC planes filled with coke. Incidentally if you shot one of em down it would be snowing snow :v:
Didn't know the cartels had Migs. All jokes aside, I support troops being deployed on the border. The violence in Mexico is just out of control.
Members of Congress grumbled when the Obama administration pulled 1,200 National Guard soldiers off of the U.S. / Mexican border in February
every republican ever pees themself
Sort of wish that the US would "invade" Mexico, just to clean up these damned drug cartels. I know that it would be seen as an act of "global policing" and "imperialism" however, not only are innocents getting killed in mexico, but this whole problem is spiraling out of control without any real solution. I would rather see american troops fighting for their own country's safety for a change rather than what is going on in Afghanistan and Iraq. Also, to avoid the pit falls of those two wars, an intervention in mexico would NEED to be a nation wide effort.
