• Ron Paul defends Julian Assange
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) is taking a stand as one of Julian Assange’s few defenders in Washington, arguing that the WikiLeaks founder should get the same protections as the media. Attorney General Eric Holder said this week that the Justice Department is examining whether Assange can be charged with a crime for posting hundreds of thousands of leaked government intelligence documents and diplomatic cables. Many Republicans have gone even further in their attacks on Assange, especially former Arkansas GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee, who said this week that the WikiLeaks founder should be tried for treason and executed if found guilty. Oh fuck, I didn't know they were aiming for execution. Surely if that would to somehow happen, he'd forever be a martyr.
Oh fuck, I didn't know they were aiming for execution. Surely if that would to somehow happen, he'd forever be a martyr.
They aren't. One idiot suggested it.
It's about time somebody stands up and defends him.
That's nice. He's still fucking insane, though. (Ron Paul)
Ron Paul is an interesting character. He seems to know his shit pretty well, and although I disagree with some of what this guy says, I do admit he is a pretty rational person for a political entity, and does have some good ideas. Normally politicians are motivated by power. Ron Paul seems to deviate from that norm a bit.
I love Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is an interesting character. Normally politicians are motivated by power. Ron Paul seems to deviate from that norm a bit.
I dunno, a lot of his ideas are ultraconservative - going back to the gold standard? US isolationism? He's not crazy, but I think he'd make a much worse president than any of the past four.
Obama is a p. good president.
Obama is a p. good president.
Where the hell does this statement even come from? [editline]3rd December 2010[/editline]
I dunno, a lot of his ideas are ultraconservative - going back to the gold standard? US isolationism? Also it prevents the stupid shit going on now where the government chooses to just make more money, thus devaluing everything....
Obama is a p. good president.
Well, he hasn't fucked up anything major, but he hasn't actually done much of anything. He wasted too much political energy trying to reform the health-care system, and he didn't even get much of it passed. And that was when his party had a majority in Congress. Now that the Republicans have the House, getting anything else through is going to be nigh-impossible.
All I know is Ron Paul has the saddest politician picture I've ever seen. :ohdear:

He's just interesting because he deviates from the norm when compared to other politicians. I don't see him wanting to be president for more power, but to try to fix the problems he sees wrong, which is very noble of him.
What is wrong with money actually having a fixed value?
That's not even how it works. Gold has a flexible and dynamic price - if a dollar was worth 10 grams of gold, it would still change value. Even worse, it would change value as the market value for gold changes, like it always does. Finally, the economy can't grow too much if you have a gold standard - there's only 40 tons or so of gold on the planet, not enough for the economy we have now, let alone ten years from now. Edit: Yes, I used the wrong number for "total amount of gold". Revised down below to actual amount.
40 tons or so of gold on the planet, not enough for the economy we have now, let alone ten years from now.
pretty sure there's a lot more than that
I like how everyone is tiptoeing around in this thread because they don't want to look like they disagree with what he said but they don't want to look like they support him either. Basically a broken clock is right twice a day and that's all that needs to be said here.
That was his campaign HQ after the '08 election, I believe...
..Oh. :frown:
Basically a broken clock is right twice a day and that's all that needs to be said here.
people still use 12-hour clocks?
pretty sure there's a lot more than that
I read an article on HowStuffWorks (http://money.howstuffworks.com/question213.htm) and it claimed that there is an estimated 10 billion ounces, or 283,495,231 kg.
people still use 12-hour clocks?
Yes. It's also a saying.
pretty sure there's a lot more than that
I was running off memory, not the best way to cite numbers. Actually the number is 165,000 tons, still not that much. That's only 7 trillion dollars, for all the gold ever mined. Yeah, that sounds like a lot, but that's just half the GDP of the US alone. So either gold becomes octuples in price (very bad, since gold is used heavily in modern electronics and satellites), or the economy shrinks by 87%. The number I was thinking of was an oft-cited figure of "all the gold ever mined could produce a cube 60 feet to a side.

Ron Paul 2012 :patriot:. Ok, I´m not even american. But he seems like the only damn politician who respects people´s rights. He´s such a cool guy, he reminds me of Leary. Obama is fine too, though.
Ron Paul is only conservative in his economics- he's a libertarian, and holds that in economics we should return to the ideas put in place by the founders of 'trading with all, allying with none'- something I see as a good thing in contrast with our huge reach today. I don't agree with his economic theories, but being quite the leftist libertarian I am myself, I have to say that support Ron Paul because of his outlook on the media, the government, rights, and liberties. I'm glad that there's a politician who has some standing who is willing to defend Assange.
leftist libertarian
dude what
Obama is a p. good president.
The only reason I routed for Obama is because I didn't want the other guy to win, I'm Republican.
people still use 12-hour clocks?
Do analog clocks that go to 24 and only revolve once per day even exist
