It is because of the 1 to 1 re-creation and the way the pandemic has [happened]. Basically, everything has been hit and there are no more resources because everyone tried to get out. There is no more gasoline in the cars, there is no traffic, you’re on foot. With the level of detail we have, doing Midtown Manhattan is a huge open-world experience and more than enough to sink your teeth into. It is a very sizable open-world game. - Magnus Jansén, Creative Director
NYC is pretty fuckin huge, a 1:1 scale manhattan would be pretty big if your on foot only. GTA IV is a good NYC-esque map, but its massively scaled down.
That seems interesting. I'm sort of doubtful about the way the game is set up though because of that trailer where they showed off teamkilling

It's not a DayZ Clone apparently.
That seems interesting. I'm sort of doubtful about the way the game is set up though because of that trailer where they showed off teamkilling
thats only in the darkzones where its basically open pvp.

Yet still insanely scaled down graphics a la Watch_Dogs, and we do not even know about PC optimization. The gameplay looks solid so far, but enemies are too bullet spongy. This is very concerning

Cautiously optimistic that this will turn out to be a good game At least it isn't going to be outright dog shit like Unity
Who gives a fuck about graphics when you're getting a 1:1 scale map? Do you have any idea how rare that is in games?
I'd rather have pretty graphics and nice FPS count over "extremely big" hollow game spaces
Fuck this open world bullshit. Literally so sick of it. When are action games going to get solid level design again?
I'd rather have pretty graphics and nice FPS count over "extremely big" hollow game spaces
when will it ever be enough? please stop killing video games
Fuck this open world bullshit. Literally so sick of it. When are action games going to get solid level design again?
I've always preferred open world so I'm quite happy about it. So long as ubisoft isn't in charge. Blaming an open world setting for a game's shortcomings is just scapegoating.
so about that
I didn't say anything about this particular game, I guess we'll see how that goes :v:
Fuck this open world bullshit. Literally so sick of it. When are action games going to get solid level design again?
You do realize this game is structured to be a third person Destiny styled game? This isn't a normal third person action/shooter game.
You do realize this game is structured to be a third person Destiny styled game? If Bungie just stuck to a great solid campaign with real progression and adventurous advancement from level to level it would have been a much better game. "normal" action games are dying. Mainly because everyone bitches about linear design, but then game developers just take a complete opposite turn into trying to make a game with an open world but with nothing really interesting happening in it.

It was a good mix between the two, and it came out 8 years ago.

That said I got in on it after The Taken King so I can offer no comment about the release version. If The Division is honestly Destiny but in Third Person, I'll gladly take it. At least this will be on PC and I can actually play with people I know.
i haven't even looked into the division at all, can someone make a somewhat nutshelled comparison of the division for someone who loves things like STALKER?
A shallow game with nothing but pretty graphics is nice for about five minutes and then you realize you're playing a video game and not a interactive art piece, I'd take actual game substance over graphics 100% of the time. A 1:1 recreation of a real world location, especially a section of a major city like NYC, is a hell of a lot more interesting than ~pretty graphics~.
You're extremely naive if you expect this game to be have a lot of depth to it. A 1:1 scale map means fuck all if most of it is just buildings you can't enter. Thats what he meant by "Hollow game spaces". If the map were 1:1 scale with fully explorable buildings and subways and what not, that would be significant. But if it's just going to be a huge empty map, then this isn't at all impressive. I would rather have a game that looks pretty and runs well than an unoptimized mess with a massive map that runs like ass.
I still think Crysis 1 was a fucking masterpiece because of this. A linear A to B, but you get plenty of open space between the two and occasionally a side-objective that lets you branch off to deal with that however you please, plus an overall game system designed around letting you stealth, brute force, or creatively handle things however you wished if you had the right stuff on-hand. .. in a way, Crysis 1 probably did its overall intent better than Metal Gear Solid V in the general scheme of things, even if I prefer MGSV's gameplay core more.
By the way the devs that are making the division are the same devs behind World in Conflict. if they say its gonna be a quality experience i would trust them. also the game engine seems pretty nice

Half of these features in the engine will probably be removed due to consoles not being to handle it. Global illumination will probably not be in the final game. But if it is, I'll be impressed.
Well I won't buy the Division on release but it looks like a fun coop game to get when it's cheap enough.

There were just a bunch of instanced fairly small areas that weren't connected in any way. Even just regular streets have a bunch of abandoned cars and barricades and other stuff and it did seem like there's a ton of different interior areas you go through, one seemingly being the subway.
Maybe I just haven't played enough of these games, but with most open-world games I've played the biggest problems didn't really have anything to do with the world being implemented poorly. For example, I got bored of Mad Max 8 hours in largely because of the repetitive ground combat. Admittedly though, out of the games I've played Ubisoft hasn't published any of them so... Anyways, this game looks pretty fun, though looking at the publisher's track record I'm gonna hold off until release.
1 to 1? I'm skeptical. I wonder if the gameplay is any good though, from what I've seen, nothing jumps out at me in particular, but maybe there is more to see.
Yes but, is it all open world?
