Thought this was pretty cool, released by David Bowie's old manager Tony Visconti.

It's a new mix with the same vocals but using another take of the instrumental part. The video is directed by Mick Rock who was David Bowie's (and pretty much everyone elses) private photographer back in the 1970's. Not quite sure who did the mix, but my guess would also be Rock.

Also it's in HD and with proper colours now. The previous versions of the video have always been in very poor quality or completely bleached out. :D
God I miss Bowie
His music helped me get through so much, this song in particular holds a lot of meaning to me. It's almost bizarre hearing it all slightly different
Were the strings rerecorded or are they the originals? Either way, I think it's fun to hear such a cut down version, and the song definitely still works (how could it not, to be honest).
Either way, hard to believe it's almost a year ago. About this time last year I was just excited for Blackstar, couldn't wait for him to do another album after that one as well. Sad that wasn't going to happen, but Blackstar definitely let him end on a high note.
What a weird guy. Didnt he have some kind of personality disorder because he played so many different characters?
edit: God I wasnt insulting him. He is weird, but thats a good thing.
edit2:
He was beyond creative, the stuff that he did and how he performed his characters was, by definition, weird. It was different and it was amazing. I wasn't bashing him at all.
I don't think so, but he went through an awful lot of styles over the years and went all in on each and every one of them. Like, just listen to the differences between say this, his latest album and "Low", a late seventies album which clearly inspired a lot of modern artsy synth pop, notably Highasakite here in Norway the last few years.
Life On Mars was the first track I heard by David Bowie, and I was hooked to his music since then.
It's really cool to have a different mix of this track. :)

I just remember reading about how he said he had difficulty with knowing who he really was.
The colors are nice but this mix is really dissonant and unpleasant to listen to.

Jesus christ what in the hell thats not even close to what I was saying, relax.

Still one of the best music videos of all time. So simple, so basic, so stripped down... But it's still more emotional than most modern music videos.
New mix is great, too.

The main reason he hid behind a wall of characters was because of his extreme frightness of being on stage. He absolutely hated the idea of being judged for who he truly was, so he found it much easier to dress up and act as someone else on stage. If people decided to judge him, it wasn't for who he was but for who he dressed up as and he found that to be much easier to accept. His stage frightness lessened over the years which is why it's much easier to find live performances of him being himself from the 90's and 00's compared to the 70's and 80's.

The stage fright pretty much disappeared by the late 70s, actually. Look at his Isolar II tour, he didn't put on crazy costumes or pretend to be something he wasn't. Staying in Berlin and kicking his cocaine habit really cleared his head. For the first time in years, he was finally living as himself.
Btw, the new mix is by Ken Scott, who also produced the "Hunky Dory" album.
