id Software's John Carmack is mindful of the anger over Modern Warfare 2 dropping dedicated server support. That's why he's glad Infinity Ward is going first, because he plans to do the same thing with Rage.
"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," he said, according to Variety. But he's glad "we won't have to be a pioneer on that. We'll see how it works out for everyone else."
News that Infinity Ward was dropping dedicated server support in favor of everyone playing online through its new matchmaking service IWNet touched, off, predictably, a petition-fueled backlash from a PC community that had long used dedicated servers to play Call of Duty games. Carmack, Variety said, indicated the felt the servers are a relic of PC gaming's early days.
First COD MW2, now a Game that probably won't be successful
This is exactly what should be happening.
Make an example of IW.
You do realise everything you post here from Kotaku has been posted before you in the News Node?

What the actual fuck.
PC != Console
"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers"
He never said that it was certain that Rage won't, just that he doesn't think it will.
I don't see why it's so bad, At least Carmack knows what he's doing, I'm sure it'll be good, Unlike MW2
Weren't people saying the same about IW?
retardid
uh why do you post the same news that has been posted in the News Node
With this kind of game, I am ok with it not being dedicated servers.
uh why do you post the same news that has been posted in the News Node
Because some like me don't check news node
Nope Infinite Ward is dumb for not adding community support nor dedicated servers for a game that's focused on Multiplayer, R.A.G.E. Will have mod support but no Dedicated but hey it's supposed to be a singleplayer game.
I meant *before* that happened.
Just saying that the same could happen for Rage too. Now people think they know what they are doing, and a week before release they tell you stuff like on Modern Warfare 2.
How are dedicated servers a relic of the old days? Dedicated serves allow servers to be much more professionally run, preventung retards from spoiling the game. It also allows for server modding etc.
Another problem with this, is that if the host has a terrible connection, the game goes downhill.
You don't have to post everything on Kotaku/Gizmodo.
Have they even announced what the multiplayer is like for this game? I'm imagining it more like Borderlands than MW2, so I'm thinking no dedicated could actually work for this game.

Carmack knows what he's doing, forgot about Daikatana have we?
Carmack knows what he's doing, forgot about Daikatana have we?
romero made daikatana, not carmack
If they can figure out a system that's better than dedicated servers, go all for it. But matchmaking is not better than dedicated servers.
romero made daikatana, not carmack
John Carmack is going to make you his bitch.
Will have mod support
Carmack said modding is dead.
Obviously publicity stunt. I didn't even know what rage was before this thread.

john carmack is god
do not question him
What he was really saying was that it's much more difficult and complex to make mods these days than back in the Doom days.
People could whip up mods pretty quickly and match the professionalism of the original game. Now it takes years to make a mod and it usually won't be nearly as professionally done as the original game.
Considering it's Carmack, he'll hopefully have some way of having this work out properly
Change seems to scare PC gamers
Change seems to scare PC gamers
Why change what isn't broken
I'm not gonna bother getting MW2 on the pc. I might not even get it at all...
*Sigh*
Can't people learn from other peoples mistakes.
Is it the fact people aren't able to ban people reasonless from their servers that scares so many PC owners? I don't get it at all. I think this is actually pretty good step, since it reduces the number of unused servers. If they do a good matchmaking system with a good host selection it's just going to be allright.
This is a bunch of crap. Dedicated servers give communities a sense of personalisation over the game and the kind of people they like to play with. Matchmaking Xbox style just sucks because you tend to end up playing with a bunch of idiots.
Dedicated servers should always be a part of PC games. Keep the matchmaking services to console users.
