• Apple Could Lose Iphone Naming Rights in Brazil, IPHONE Already Owned
Gradiente applied for the IPHONE trademark in 2000, more than six years before Apple submitted its own application and announced its hot-selling device. The Brazilian company won the trademark in January 2008, giving it exclusive use until 2018 under local regulations so long as it produced a product bearing the name within five years. But the company didn't appear to release a qualifying product until December, just weeks before the deadline, when it announced a smartphone called the "IPHONE Neo One."
also:
In Mexico, a telecommunications equipment firm registered its company name as iFone in 2003, four years before Apple registered the iPhone trademark there. Apple has thus far been unsuccessful in efforts to invalidate the Mexican firm's name.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323478004578302382005160380.html
I really hope Apple is forced to rename their product in those countries, even though everyone will probably still call them iPhones.
if they never released any products with the trademark, it's pretty unfair kind of like patent trolling, register something, never do anything with it, then 15 years later be a pain in the ass if they do produce products under that name, apple will just have to work out some agreements i guess
The iphone neo one is sold for RS$ 599 (about US$ 287), a dual-SIM handset running Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. It has a 3.7-inch, 320 x 480 display, a 700MHz CPU, 2GB of expandable storage, Bluetooth, 3G, WiFi and 5 / 0.3-megapixel camera

why
Because I think it would be funny?

As a proud member of the huehuehue society I find this really funny. Even though we all know Apple is gonna win

An android iphone, this sounds like serious trolling by this company.
why
Treat others the way you want to be treated as the saying goes.
They must be having an anxiety attack, they pretty much own everything related to their products, didn't they patent the circle or something?
This is patent trolling just as hard as Apple does, I don't see why this is cause for celebration
This is patent trolling just as hard as Apple does, I don't see why this is cause for celebration
Because apple are getting a taste of their own medicine
Because apple are getting a taste of their own medicine
No. That's hypocritical. People clearly don't actually care about the issues with patent trolling if they condemn it in one circumstance and not in another all because of who is involved and whether they're the one targeting or the one targeted.
Because apple are getting a taste of their own medicine
The "eye for an eye" philosophy is pretty outdated, I hope you're aware Besides, this isn't going to teach Apple any lessons; either they won't sell there or they'll bring it to court (and almost certainly win, given how much power money has in court), but either way they won't stop hoarding patents
It would be cheaper for Apple to buy the company who owns the patent than to go through court.
considering how apple could've opened a factory in brazil YEARS ago, but they essentially wanted our goverment to beg them to open a factory here, its their own fault lol, i can actually see them losing the patent, for maybe pissing off the goverment, also gradiente is well known brazilian company(in brazil at least), and brazil can be pretty protective of our companies

Many other countries have sane patent laws and are far less likely to bend to the will of a foreign company, even if Apple tries to bribe them with money. Apple isn't doing anything for the Brazilian economy, other than being a parasite, and the courts know this. They're going to be far more biased at protecting their own economy, than ruling in favor of Apple, even if Apple tries to bribe the court some large some of money.
I'd be surprised if Apple had renamed the iPhone to Newton.
That "iPhone" is on 2.3.4, with a 700MHz CPU, 3.7" 320x480 screen, 5mp rear VGA front cam portugese sauce What a pile of ass, haha, barely outpaces my old unmodded Optimus One, after my mods/tweaks the O1 would probably smoke it.
