Government warns terror arrack at Delhi "likely"
Fans should keep Australian colours at home
Officials struggle to get venues completed
SPORTS fans are being warned not to wear the green and gold national colours or fly the Australian flag at the Commonwealth Games for fear of attracting terrorists keen to target foreigners.
As the first Australian athletes headed for India, the Federal Government issued a new explicit travel warning of a "high risk" of a terrorist attack.
Security experts warned supporters to keep a low profile while in Delhi and leave their Australian colours at home.
"People should not fly Australian flags," counter-terrorism and security consultants Homeland Security Asia-Pacific spokesman Roger Henning said.
"People shouldn't wear an Aussie T-shirt, drape themselves in the Aussie flag, or draw attention to themselves in any other clothing which is identifiable as Australian."
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd confirmed there were continual reports of possible terrorist attacks.
"Visitors to India need to make their own judgments on appropriate clothing, taking into account advice provided in the travel advice," a spokeswoman for Mr Rudd said.
Prominent sports manager David Flaskas said that while wearing the Australian flag or the green and gold colours was a highlight at events such as the Olympics, Delhi was different.
"One of the great joys is wearing all the gear, (but) in this case, everyone needs to be very cognisant of what the experts are saying in relation to safety," he said.
"This is very much one case of people being very careful of what they should be wearing."
The security warnings came as Indian officials yesterday scrambled to get the Games venues finished and the athletes village into shape before the competitors arrive over the next few days.
Commonwealth Games Federation chief Mike Felinely said yesterday from Delhi there was "still a lot of work to be done" before competition started in a week.
The Department of Foreign Affairs' updated travel advice for India said: "Terrorist attacks could occur at any time anywhere in India with little or no warning.
"We continue to receive reporting that terrorists plan to attack public places, including hotels and tourist locations, in New Delhi, Mumbai and other major cities.
"Australians in New Delhi should be aware that the Commonwealth Games will be held in a security environment where there is a high risk of terrorism."
Security sources have told The Sunday Times of the potential for opportunistic kidnap plots targeting fans in Delhi.
Australian authorities have received intelligence about a plan by al-Qaida-linked terrorists to take foreign hostages.
The sources said the hostage scenario had top levels of government worried, but there was reticence to upgrade the travel warning from "high degree of caution" for fear of angering the Indian government.
Yesterday's update added the locations of the Indian Parliament and the "Red Fort" to the list of places to avoid. The alert also includes sporting events in the list of locations where past terror attacks have occurred.
Security sources say citizens of Australia, the UK, Canada and New Zealand could be the targets of opportunistic snatch attempts.
"It is a serious situation," a source said. "There is specific intelligence about an attempted hostage snatch.
"The Australian Government should be up front about this. People travelling to India, and particularly Delhi, need to be aware of the real risks."
Mr Henning warned Australian fans to take precautions.
"The Indian Government has declared it cannot guarantee the safety of tourists, including spectators when outside the Games venues, so you are on your own," he said. "Delhi is not a safe place."[/quote]

If they can't keep people safe, why are they hosting?
Let China host or something, they seem to be good with security. They don't really even have any red-tape to get in the way.

Assuming China is even part of this event.

I'm pretty sure they won't be, the Commonwealth Games are a commonwealth nation event (Under the British crown)

India rules, rich culture and beautiful country.
In Britain, you got pubs and chavs. And grey clouds all the time.

Having culture and a pretty country doesn't mean shit if everything else about it is terrible.
India isn't westernised.
It doesn't need to host the games or prove it is worthy.
Its just a plaw to pressurise and embarress a struggling fast developing country.
I hope this all doesn't go to shit. I was in Delhi a couple months ago and saw how much work and effort they are putting into the Commonwealth Games...the residents are all pretty excited.
Makes me sad that the conditions surrounding the Games are so bad. :(

I don't really understand how "rich culture" is a benefit.
They just don't want to be banned.

I was in New Delhi a few weeks ago. The place is torn up, there is ridiculous corruption in the Indian government and most of the locals think there is no chance of being prepared in time for the games.

Bandwagon is here, honk honk.
On a serious note all Americans are fat and eat Mcdonalds for breakfast lunch and dinner, and in America everyone worships Wal Mart.

I'm Australian, so I don't have pubs and chavs or grey clouds

More like backwards caste systems and masses of poor people compared to the country that made most of the world civilized.
India = The Temple of Doom
Seems nice and wonderful until you see them go crazy :derp:
