Momentary panic was sparked in Georgia after TV broadcasted the news that Russian tanks had invaded the capital and the country's president was dead.
The national network report - with echoes of the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia - turned out to be false.
However, mobile phone networks were overwhelmed with calls and many people rushed onto the streets.
Imedi TV said the aim of the report had been to show how events might unfold if the president were killed.
For a brief moment on Saturday evening many Georgians thought history was repeating itself.
'Disgusting'
It is only 18 months since Russian tanks came within 45km (28 miles) of the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
In its news report, Imedi TV showed archive footage of the war and imagined how opposition figures might seize power after an assassination of the country's President, Mikheil Saakashvili.
Although the broadcast was introduced as a simulation of possible events, the warning was lost on many Georgians.
One local news agency reported that emergency services had received an unusually high volume of calls in the ensuing minutes.
And once calm returned, the report was seen by some as a poorly disguised swipe at the Georgian opposition politicians who recently travelled to Moscow to meet Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
The head of the holding company which owns Imedi TV said the aim was to show "the real threat" of how events might unfold.
That did not stop dozens of journalists and angry Georgians who gathered outside the Imedi TV studios to protest.
One opposition politician who was there labelled the report "disgusting".

You know, I think Russia should invade Georgia and over throw their government.
This would be how the world would end if Georgia was replaced by a country that was powerful.
Georgia complain too much.
Modern War of the Worlds but with Russians.
Remember, no Russian.
This is some epic trolling.

Heh, Good trick
Remember, no Russian.
Yes.
Is president plural?
I'm technically from Georgia.
i guess you could say... the journalists were russian to the tv studio to yell at the people who aired that... xD
I don't get it, Georgia has been part of Russia since the beginning of time. It has exactly the same culture and similar language. Why do they even want to be separate?
Same thing with Ukraine.

self-determination, mainly. georgia and ukraine both would like to appease the west more then russia, and being part of russia isn't going to get them that.
then take a country that's totally the opposite, belarus, and you'll see it has a very close relationship with russia and a union between the two countries is being considered. there's others in similar situations and similar opinions of the west that considered or are considering joining a union, such as abkhazia, south ossetia, and serbia.
Ukraine is reestablishing ties with Russia.

Yeah, that was the first thing I thought when I saw the title of this thread.
Ukraine is reestablishing ties with Russia.
ukraine already has ties with russia, but after russia invaded georgia ukraine is starting to try to appease russia after it has angered it with its appeals to the west. still, i doubt that means ukraine is going to try to be as close to russia as the union state observers and members are.
Modern War of the Worlds but with Russians.
Right... Except this time they were given clear warning that it wasn't real and they STILL acted like mindless retards when they saw it.
We've come a long way, haven't we.
I guess you could say... the georgians were really russin for no reason xD
if russia invaded georgia the US would fuck them up
stay out of the US you commie scum
Wait, wait, I just got a hilarious idea.
What if something like this happened in North Korea?
Oh man, that would be epic!

Russia didn't invade. It came to the rescue of S. Ossetia.
Oh an Russia and Belarus being separate is bull. There's no point.
Russia didn't invade. It came to the rescue of S. Ossetia.
...patriotism aside, wakka
–verb (used with object)
1.
to enter forcefully as an enemy; go into with hostile intent
2.
to enter like an enemy
3.
to enter as if to take possession
Russia forcefully crossed georgia's legal borders and attacked their military. it was an invasion. this is like saying the korean war wasn't a war, because we came to rescue of the republic of korea
I know a kid who's Georgian, he has a weird accent.

Please shut up, you and every other idiot in ITN who does this.
Russia was stupid in invading Georgia. You can't conquer lands anymore (especially when you're a superpower, which is kind of ironic) with all the modern efforts to keep the peace running in the world, because you risk getting in to very deep shit with other countries.
Russia would've definitely not done that again, as it appears they learned their lesson.
