R.I.P: AlterIWnet is going offline forever on Friday

This isn't from any news source outlets but this is from their blog
Hello dearest Community,
As you've definitely heard, alterIWNet received a Cease and Desist notification from Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP on behalf of Activision Publishing Inc, demanding that we stop our operations due to infringing US and International laws.
At this time, only initial negotiations have been made, but it is certain that alterIWNet will cease all operations by the end of next week, indefinitely. During that time, you can still play the supported games, as usual.
Please refrain from taking any actions on our behalf, such as harassing letters, posts, "denial of service" attacks, telling your grandmother or anything else that you may deem wise. There is nothing more we can do here, unless Activision recognise us as a legitimate modding community.
Additionally, do not trust rumors. Everything official will be posted in this announcement. Anything you've heard that contradicts this announcement or is not mentioned here is likely false.
Thank you all for your continued dedication and contributions to alterIWNet and to PC gaming as a whole.
Sincerely,
Max
alterIWNet Administrator
Edit: After these forums go offline the only way to keep track of what we're doing is to be on IRC. Use the chat applet here:http://rizon.net/chat/ and then join #alteriwnet or #blitz with your nickname. Write this down - it may not be here later!!
still sad to see them go, fuck activision.
Who in the what now?
i am guessing it's a alternate Infinity ward server host for call of duty games that isn't exactly "official"

AIWnet was a modification for MW2 to give official servers instead of using the pointless matchmaking system allowing for mods and shit to go through easily. Made mw2 funner and better.
As much as I hate what CoD has become, the alterIW modding community was actually pretty good and came up with some decent stuff.
teknogods has a more stable version of what aIW did
MW2 modding, never knew that was that big of a thing.

There were actually some pretty creative and fun MW2 mods. There was a zombie survival one which made the map grey and foggy, with NPC zombies. They didnt have proper animations, and they only spawned if you walked near a spawnpoint, but they were still pretty cool.
I preferred AIW, I don't know why it just ran like I wanted it to. I wonder if anyone else will try to make a duplicate or replica.
And I've never tried teknogods mod.
This is a shame, this mod was the best thing about MW2 on PC
As fun as this was when I tried it, it sure took Activision a long time to send them a Cease and Desist

They were too busy making the next 6 call of dutys

Replacing the "ctrl" and "c" and "v" keys a lot chews up quite a bit of time
God damn it my dad was planning on downloading it this Friday, to try it out :(
I must say that is fucking disgusting how they have turned their backs on the PC gaming community and now done this.

Use teknogod's mw3 multiplayer servers instead, it's more advanced, safer, and more stable. Most of the (very good) programmers I know who develop and find aimbots/multihacks/exploits for the real game have confirmed that they would rather their clients use teknogods (as opposed to aIW) due to this reason.
aIW is practically malware and basically used their clients as a botnet to ddos their competition, this has been well documented and you can find it almost anywhere.
Wow, after all the hours I spent writing a great map voting plugin for this :(
Was fun while it lasted.
"people modding our games to have more fun? shit on their fun and take it away" - Activision

I guess the fact was is that some people were using pirated copies to play the game for free. But with how horrible MW2 turned out Craptivision should have given it to us for free anyway.

I'd use teknogod's servers with my Steam copy of MW3 but unfortunately I have to free up an astonishing 15GB or so of space to install the multiplayer :v:
This sucks. I planned on getting it once I could run some things better. Now my hopes are gone. :(
Pussies... I reckon someone should continue this in sweden
Huh, I was like just about to download this again
that sucks
yeah but doesn't mw3net still exist
So is Activision going to start cracking down on all of these or is it only AlterIW?
If it was a patch/mod, then I'd say 'fuck Activision'.
But it's a standalone, meaning they're illegally distributing game files, so I can see why they've been taken down.

If I were them I'd be tempted to release the source code in a final act of defiance but portray it as being hacked
you know, there's always steam, where you can play the legitimate version of the game

Except that the legitimate version still kind of sucks? And that the whole reason people liked this type of thing was because it added things that they felt MW2 lacked?
(dedicated servers, custom maps, mods, etc.)
