"We have decided to prohibit Confederate flags, and many items containing this image, because we believe it has become a contemporary symbol of divisiveness and racism," eBay spokesperson Johnna Hoff said in an email to CNN. "This decision is consistent with our long-standing policy that prohibits items that promote or glorify hatred, violence and racial intolerance."
I don't think everyone who wants to buy a confederate flag is filled with racism and hatred. Some do want to honor the hundreds of thousands of people who lost their lives, and cities/towns that were destroyed in the war. This is getting a bit stupid.
It's a shame that a terrorist attack has to be the kicker to ban stuff like this
We're so against racism we'll generalize 9 million people who were living in the South at the time of the Civil War as all being racists. There's no irony here at all, no sir.
first it was etsy banning potions and now my CONFEDERATE FLAGS TOO? What am I suppose to sacrifice to the liberation gods now?!

[sp]People rating this dumb actually live in basements and feel threatened.[/sp]

clearly the answer is to ban things to stop racism
I understand the Confederate flag has other meanings besides racism just like the Nazi insignia but that doesn't mean you should wave either of them around. They both have a MAIN symbol which is racism, the other symbols don't excuse someone who claims to not be racist
theres no irony here, the confederate flag was the representation of the confederacy, a society where one color of man was superior to all others. to wave the flag remembering those that died to protect that country is daft, remember the people, not the country, theres tons of other symbols and flags that have been used to represent civil war veterans throughout the last century
While there are a lot of way to represent the people and events that occured in the civil war, a flag is generally the easiest; and not just for the civil war but pretty much any war. Like if someone wanted to remember the losses of japan in WW2, I doubt they would use a katana as the center piece; flags are just universally easier to identify events and people with.
It's almost like they are trying to force us out from our basements. What's next, ban gasmasks!?
Ban racism
Not to mention collecting things for the historical value in and of itself. But I guess the receipt on some WWII replica itself makes me a Neo-Nazi, so
Except this is a ban of confederate flag merchandise. AKA: Shirts with confed flags on them, mugs, hats, etc. There's a MASSIVE difference between memorabilia and normal merchandise. Buying period accurate replicas of actual flags and the like would fall under historic memorabilia and not general merchandise.
So are they going to ban Nazi memorabilia too? Doesn't make a lot of sense to ban Confederate flags but still allow stuff like this.

The swastika in the Nazi context is purely a symbol of racism and hatred. The Confederate battle flag is not, was not, never was, and only is now because of hicks and revisionism. 300,000 people didn't die on the battlefield during the Civil War to defend the right of people they didn't care about to own people they didn't care about. Were they still racist? Mostly, and here's some news for you: pretty much everyone in 1860 was racist, including Northerners. Doesn't mean average Joe Southerner was a slaveowner or supported the institution of slavery.

A flag for the town or city that was destroyed? Any flag that wasn't actually flown by a group who wanted to own other human beings?

Are a lot of you forgetting this flag's purpose during the civil rights era? You know one big event that I'm sure you all were taught, little rock nine? Sorry fellas, guess all Germans in WW1 were Nazis, too - here's a Neo-Nazi using the Imperial German flag.
The issue is that suddenly it's OK to vandalize Confederate war graves and memorials and now it's evil to display Confederate flags in Confederate memorial contexts. That's one of the flag's main uses today. And no matter what, the confederate flag represented the confederacy which promoted slavery, you could go into how slavery was dying anyway and most people didn't own slaves and whatnot, but the bottomline still remains. The confederacy did support slaves and that flag represented that territory, it's engraved in every American's mind since everyone learned that at a young age. Also I was refering to the Nazi swastika in general since without the Nazi context, it has many other meanings. Although I do agree it's not okay to vandalize confederate war graves, it's not surprising though with the presence of racism in the South.

Everyone has their own reason for owning that flag, just because some people misuse or make their own symbolizing of the original flag should not penalize the people who want to buy/own for non-racist purposes.
People forget that the flag is also used (and primarily used, atleast in my experiences) as a symbol of rebellion or defiance. Truly banning this rebellious flag will make it less desirable. Going full Streisand effect on the confederate flag will just lead to it becoming even moreso a symbol of rebellion.
