• Dawkins: "Religion is no moral compass"
GPS digital producer Jason Miks sits down with renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, author of the Selfish Gene and An Appetite for Wonder, to discuss readers’ questions on religion, its role in society and whether children can be described as “Christian.” A number of readers noting your skepticism over religion’s role in society ask whether an absence of religion would leave us without a moral compass? The very idea that we get a moral compass from religion is horrible. Not only should we not get our moral compass from religion, as a matter of fact we don’t. We shouldn’t, because if you actually look at the bible or the Koran, and get your moral compass from there, it’s horrible – stoning people to death, stoning people for breaking the Sabbath. Now of course we don’t do that anymore, but the reason we don’t do it is that we pick out those verses of the bible that we like, and reject those verses we don’t like. What criteria do we use to pick out the good ones and reject the bad ones? Non-biblical criteria, non-religious criteria. The same criteria as guide any modern person in their moral compass that has nothing to do with religion.
Source
Is this really news?
Is this really news?
its a blog post which tells us that dawkins doesn't like religion it's euphoric is what it is
Atheist Revolution 2013 Here We Go Rockin' Dawkins
People have been (including him) stating this for years. How is this news? Religion really doesn't provide a moral compass, considering we choose what passages of religious texts we like to use for our moral arguments, and ignore the rest, while a different group will do the exact same thing.
I hope this thread wasn't made just to start another FP atheist circlejerk. Gives SH a bad name :v:
Dawkins really comes across as the worst kind of atheist. Belittling other people's views doesn't make them turn to yours, Dick. [editline]...[/editline] Btw, I am an atheist.

Eh, color me bad but from what a lot of religious tomes say there's a lot of relatively good tid bits in them, but people seem to have a hard time following them because to quote Phil Oakey "Were only human" That being said I have no time for deviants and extremists of all sorts, they can live their lives so long as it doesn't interfere with mine. Unfortunately they see fit to intrude as often as they can.

*tips fedora*
SH already has a bad name
That was my punchline, but by the boxes I'm getting I don't think people got the joke
This just in: Dawkins isn't a fan of religion.
I hope this thread wasn't made just to start another FP atheist circlejerk. Gives SH a bad name :v:
Atheist circlejerk. Most of the time these days it anti-atheist circlejerks. The very first things in this thread are that stupid "euphoric" meme and "Atheist Revolution 2013 Here We Go Rockin' Dawkins"
*tips fedora*
this sort of assumption that all atheists must be fedora-wearing sperglords is honestly worse than the atheists themselves. and it doesn't make you look witty or original either.
You're allowed to criticize an atheist without having to assure people that you are, in-fact, an atheist
I guess I just wanted to ensure that there isn't the view that all atheists think that Dawkins is the non-religious messiah.
this sort of assumption that all atheists must be fedora-wearing sperglords is honestly worse than the atheists themselves. and it doesn't make you look witty or original either.
It's definitely a tired joke by now but it's still a little funny. I don't think anyone is ever generalizing "atheists" by making that joke though, just mocking a minority of embarrassing people who are fanatic about their atheism.
I'm atheist but I don't know if I entirely like Dawkins. I mean, there's a lot of reasons its no moral compass but for most people. For some if not many though, it REALLY helps them in improving their life. Personally I think Science should be taught. But Secondary optional classes on basic and advanced religious ideology is something all schools need. Being fair is the only way you can ensure that you're a good human being. This is why many atheists are dickheads. Theist or not, if you don't accept most people for who they are, you're the one pointing out 'problem people' but in reality your ideology is the problem, not the solution.

[editline]...[/editline] Btw, I am an atheist.
I wouldn't say Dawkins is the worst kind of atheist by a long shot. For a starter he actually knows the things he argues against, and secondly he can actually debate. More than the shitlords of /r/athiesm and various other Internet dwellings. Dawkins does bait a lot though, he does have a habit of "calling out" religions just to start debate.
Is this really news?
Aaah shit. I just noticed that it was a blog post. It was linked from the CNN Homepage, I didn't know. Apologies everyone. If this needs to be locked, do it.
I guess I just wanted to ensure that there isn't the view that all atheists think that Dawkins is the non-religious messiah.
Yeah definitely, but I reckon most users on facepunch are just casually atheist anyways, it's almost preaching to the choir

Those "I'm the only concious human being" assholes who think the world revolves around them and that if you're religious you're automatically a horrible human being. Looking to just start a religious debate where they hold their fingers in their ears, not to share philosophical ideas but to go "IM RIGHT UR WRONG!!!!". But they do it in a time that is not appropriate. this is why I don't argue religion, only discuss it. Only immaturity and mindless bitching is sprouted from a religious debate.
You're allowed to criticize an atheist without having to assure people that you are, in-fact, an atheist
A lot of people on Facepunch would actually think otherwise.
But it takes MORE proof to be Atheist.
it takes more proof to be religious because their isn't any scientific basis on god, it's more based around a feeling than physical proof But if you have that feeling, that's you. I don't see why that shouldn't be good enough for you. I just wish people accepted that. I'm more http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism, I just want physical proof, which is what most people that are atheist want anyways. and as for atheism.
