I know each movie is different from each other, and it is hard to compare them both. But they are pretty much both the competing sci-fi alien movies.
Discuss here what you thought was better and why. I know most of you are going to pick D9 though :P.
Avatar surprised me, I thought it was going to be mediocre with great CGI.
District 9 surprised me even more, and turned out to be amazing considering the little attention it got before the movie.
EDIT: haha, 33 dumbs.
hey let's compare two totally different movies because they both got aliens and shit
District 9 is better.
Liked them both equally.
District 9 for the grim, bloody, and more realistic feel to it.
Avatar for the CGI action and environment.
hey let's compare two totally different movies because they both got aliens and shit
I'm saying lets compare the movies because they were put out to be competitors. Now that both movies are out I was just wondering what people where thinking about both movies, got a problem with that?
Let's compare pizza and sedimentary rock.

Then why did you make this thread?
But they are pretty much both the competing sci-fi alien movies.
Uh. No they aren't. If D9 was in theaters at this moment then maybe they would be. Still unlikely though. The two movies are nothing alike other than "lol aliens".
Trying to compare District 9 and Avatar is like trying to compare apples and oranges. The only thing that they have in common is that the humans want the aliens to get the fuck out. But to answer the question, they were equally great movies and deserve the critical acclaim that they've gotten so far.
Well both deal with similar issues of a people (in both cases aliens) being oppressed, and then overcoming that oppression when someone from the "enemy" side ends up joining the aliens and helps set them free.
On that note I would have to say Avatar is better because of its groundbreaking 3D CGI effects. Seriously this movie is indescribably amazing in 3D. However in terms of story I'd lean towards District 9, because Avatar was a little to heavy handed on the Native-American references.
Both are great movies, but Avatar just pushes the boundary of CGI too far to be ignored.

competitors and yet they released 4 months apart? right
Avatar was by far the best movie I have ever seen.
So you guys disagree that its my favorite movie? You don't know what I'm thinking!
Something about this thread tells me I should probably see Avatar.
Let's compare pizza and sedimentary rock.
Bash this thread all you want, all i want to do see other peoples opinions about each movie.
God, I need to watch more movies.
I actually didn't like District 9 as much as the masses did. That said, I still must concede it's the better film from a plot/substance point of view. Avatar obviously had better visuals and technology (Which is to be expected with a budget 10x larger)
I didn't like Avatar. The animations were good, but it just wasn't my thing.
D-9 had a better story. Avatar had better CGI.
Any questions?
Well Avatar was amzing to see at the IMax 3d, no bullshit "in your face 3d" but actual 3d that immerses you and soon you forget ur watching with glasses on. The story was ok, but the cgi was unbelievable,
District 9 had a better overall imo. My parents will tell you its the gayest film you could ever seen since they couldnt handle the aliens aspect.
Really the comparison is that Avatar's budget was 500 million while D-9's was 30 million, And both are equally as good in different ways.
I didn't like Avatar. The animations were good, but it just wasn't my thing.
I agree, avatar was a bland movie wrapped in amazing CGI.
I also have to say that D9's CGI is almost just as amazing.
I'm pretty sure we will be seeing sequels too both movies.
Avatar's Backstory/History/Lore, CGI Effects, Fight-scenes, Romance made it the best movie in my mind.
From what I've seen of District 9, It's fuckin' just as smexy.
District 9 for it's realism and plot, I haven't seen Avatar yet.
Let's compare pizza and sedimentary rock.
This pizza is delicious, whereas this sedimentary rock tastes like teeth.
I liked both, can't really be bothered to think about why, people here have probably already mentioned it, but I still like both
Just watched District 9 with my dad. The beginning is just so slow and I thought the entire movie would be from a news point-of-view. But once the movie got going with the story, things got good. I liked the story since it was something new and like how the ending provided room for a sequel. Well, I hate it since now I have to wait and see if a sequel is confirmed, THEN wait for the movie to come out.
Haven't seen Avatar, though. Nearest IMAX is 20 minutes away...
District 9. It accomplished far more with much less.
The competition is invisible.
Avatar is a breakthrough in CGI animation and you felt deeply for the characters.
District 9 left me kind of in a dull mood and I hated the first 20 minutes, I thought it was a great movie but I'm going with avatar
I have yet to see either. I feel as I missed out on something spectacular by missing D9 in theatre.

Sedinemtary rock is awesome but it hurts my teeth. :<
Those two movies, along with Pandorum, each made me think about philosophy/spirituality for several days after I saw them.
District 9 won it for me, I didn't like the idea of Avatar in the first place, how you have these smurfish beings that are too human like to truly make me think "XENOS SCUM!"
D-9 made me distant and close at the same time to the aliens, since you have them clicking to communicate, but they get drunk and throw up, act pissy, etc. Seems more Hobbesian, which in my opinion is better.

You haven't seen jack shit if Avatar felt spiritual to you.
