Why are people so obsessed with an award on an internet forum? - General

I see tons of "what can I do for gold member" or "what can I do for a custom title" these days. I don't remember if the demand was so great back in '08 but it's sure as hell gotten to the point of retardation. People are eating shit, stapling paper to their forehead, and other assorted crap to get a title/gold member which we all know they'll never get if they try for it. What's the point? To have people on an internet forum see that you have a gold username or a stupid little quip underneath it? Wouldn't it be more worthwhile to go out and get a REAL achievement, like winning the basketball championships with your team and ect? Is it REALLY that important that you have a title? Or are you all just attention whores looking to get some respect? I'm sure we all know that if someone does some crazy shit solely for the purpose of getting some stupid as shit thing on the internet, we're not going to respect them more or less then we did before. And it's stupid that some people think they'll get respected more. The whole concept of Gold Member is unclear to me. If it were my choice I'd just abolish the whole system and separate it by Member and Admin/Moderator.
