We had no idea what to expect, but everyone was in for a treat, and they became very special friends. On Monday, Aug. 122, the day news broke of Williams' passing, Koko and Penny and Ron (Drs. Patterson and Cohn) were together when phone calls started coming in about the sad event. After the first all, Koko came to Dr. Patterson with an inquiring look on her face. Dr. Patterson explanied that "we have ost a dear friend, Robin Williams." Koko wa quiet and looked very thoughtful (see photo bottom left). More phone calls about the news came in, and Koko overheard one from a former colleague who had worked with Williams while he filmed a public service announcement for The Gorilla Foundation (based on his visit with Koko) in 2003. The colleague's voice broke at the end of the conversation. About a half an hour later, Koko signed to Penny: "CRY LIP" (LIP is Koko's sign for woman). At the end of the day, Koko became very somber, with her head bowed and her lip quivering (see photo bottom right). We at the Gorilla Foundation are all greatly saddened by the news of Robin William’s death, and would like to offer his family our deepest condolences. We would also like to honor his life, which was a profound gift to humanity — and to other great apes like Koko — by sharing the following video of Robin’s powerfully emotional meeting with Koko in 2001:
Poor koko
In the above video, notice that Robin made Koko smile — something she hadn’t done for over 6 months, ever since her lifelong gorilla companion, Michael, passed away at the age of 27.
When I was laying in bed last night I wondered if koko knew and how she would react..
This one makes me sad.
My heart strings. I'm in tears now...

My god, my fucking heart is broken. That video had me in fits of laughter and tears when I realised Koko would never experience that again :(
Uhhhh.. Did he regularly see Koko? Because otherwise, I somehow doubt the ape understood that Williams died.
Apes are compassionate, we may never know to what extent. Either way, it reacted with news of death with sadness, whether she remembered him or not. Which is pretty remarkable still.
Uhhhh.. Did he regularly see Koko? Because otherwise, I somehow doubt the ape understood that Williams died.
Sure understood when the cat companion died.
My strings, I am going to have a heart attack. :(
Isn't koko the same Gorilla that wanted to mate with Robin? I'm pretty sure he even joked about it in his standup
Wasn't Koko proven to be heavily telegraphed by her trainer?
Sure understood when the cat companion died.
Yeah but it looks like the cat was there very often, and unless Robin Williams was with Koko often as well, it would be amazing if she still remembered.
All I know is that I'm weary of all primates after that one woman had her face ripped off. actually wild animals in general freak me out
Wasn't Koko proven to be heavily telegraphed by her trainer?
Not as far as I know. Koko has demonstrated she can tell lies with sign language.
Shit... Just shit. :(
Uhhhh.. Did he regularly see Koko? Because otherwise, I somehow doubt the ape understood that Williams died.
Gorillas a a hell of a lot smarter than you think they are. [editline]13th August 2014[/editline] That goes for all animals actually. I used to work with parrots and I honestly thought some of them were as smart as humans in some regards.
I feel sorry for Koko even more just thinking of the new Planet Of The Apes film coming to cinemas, imagine if they took her to see the film to try and cheer her up.
Yeah but it looks like the cat was there very often, and unless Robin Williams was with Koko often as well, it would be amazing if she still remembered.
she watched his movies hence why she was happy and amazed to see him in person. She probably kept watching said movies so when she heard he died it really upset her.
Kind of touching to know Robin's appeal spanned beyond the human species. Pretty surreal honestly.
koko has dealt with death more often than most people i know

"The only human hairier than me"
robin williams was truly loved by everyone on this planet. I wish it would have made him happy.
robin williams was truly loved by everyone on this planet. I wish it would have made him happy.
The tragic thing about depression is that no matter how many people tell you they love you and think you're great, you still feel like shit because you yourself keep telling you you're shit. And you yourself are around a lot more often than anyone else.
Koko's pretty incredible. When Mr. Rogers visited her, she went apeshit (pun intended) and frantically signed "SWEATER", which was her sign for Mr. Rogers.
Uhhhh.. Did he regularly see Koko? Because otherwise, I somehow doubt the ape understood that Williams died.
If I recall correctly, Koko gets to watch television and can recognize certain celebrities and their mannerisms because of that. Like during that above time where Mister Rogers was invited to see Koko, one of the first things she did was try to take off his shoes because Rogers always did that at the start of his show.
