South Australia to got to referendum on nuclear waste repository
The debate over a high-level nuclear waste dump is not over yet in South Australia, with Premier Jay Weatherill saying he wants to hold a statewide referendum on the issue.
Mr Weatherill said the only path forward was through the restoration of bipartisanship "and a broad social consent secured through a statewide referendum".
"Ultimately this is a matter for people to decide, not politicians," he said.
"If broad social consent were to be achieved through a referendum, a local Aboriginal community would also be given a final right of veto on any future facility on their land.
"By providing a right of veto to an Aboriginal community concerning their land, their concerns can be allayed."
Mr Weatherill's push for a nuclear dump in SA suffered a setback last week when a citizens' jury decided against the idea.
The jury of more than 300 randomly selected people delivered its 50-page report to Mr Weatherill after deliberating on the issue across three weekends in October and November.
I see the ABC keep omitting the key line "randomly selected from volunteers".

Yipee - a bunch of people who believe the land is spiritual (not a small religious ite or anything, but acres upon acres of land) can hold to ransom a whole State.

I get that its a small minority of people and all, but you can't just leave them out
Shouldnt be up to aborigines, their opinion does not succeed everyone else's.
Unless its on their sacred ground or some shit.
I'm glad, We shouldn't have to hold other peoples trash because they cannot be bother to store it.
Oh good another referendum. Can we stop this shit please, people never have all the facts.

It's their damn land, so of course they should have a say. Having respect for that makes us a better society than we were under the days of the White Australia policy.

Store it in your backyard then

It's not. "Aboriginal land" in most cases in SA (with the exception of the APY lands in bumb-fuck nowhere) allows aborigines access to crown land for cultural reasons.

You need to realise it's a slither of land out of a huge land mass - it's also legally not theirs in situations like this. Utilising unused land for a nuclear waste dump is nothing like the White Australia policy...
Store it in your backyard then
I think you misunderstand why we are having a referendum. We don't want to store it our backyard.
I read the title as "Nuclear waste suppository".

Recent polls suggest wide support, so no, I think you're wrong there.

No shit they should have a say. They just should have the same voice as everyone else. They absolutely should not have the final word on the topic, it should be up to everyone, equally.

Not everyone else has a connection with that land, so if they didn't ask for the specific consent of the local Aboriginal community, that would be the 99.9% of every other voter in South Australia determining what goes on in that community's land. It would be very disrespectful, and a PR disaster, if they just bypassed asking for the consent of the local Aboriginal community.

Not exactly.
Only 48% of South Australians support a nuclear waste dump in SA http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/nearly-half-of-sa-supports-nuclear-waste-dump-in-the-state-galaxy-poll-shows/news-story/82be87d9218ce62eaa0574f3b6a9c7b9
Only 15% of regional South Australians (keeping in mind that a nuclear waste dump would have to be in a regional or rural area) support a nuclear waste dump http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-09-21/port-pirie-community-reacts-to-nuclear-waste-dump-proposal/7865200
If the close result of Brexit is anything to go by, maybe nuclear waste dump plans shouldn't go ahead, considering how much of a divided issue it is.

You can't go on a radio show and ask people to call in on their views before declaring it a poll. It sure as hell isn't going to be accurate in any way.
