The Tucson City Council voted 5-1 today to sue the state of Arizona to overturn SB 1070, the controversial immigration law that requires local police to verify the status of those they "reasonably suspect" are here illegally. Councilman Steve Kozachik voted against the lawsuit. The law is clearly flawed and presents enforcement problems, Kozachik said , but we "need to de-escalate the conversation." Filing a lawsuit runs counter to that goal, he said. But other council members said the damage to the image of Tucson and Arizona, as well as the negative effect the law will have on the tourism industry is too great to ignore. Further, the cost of enforcement will be excessive and the state is unwilling to pay for it. Mayor Bob Walkup said the law is based on a misguided notion illegal immigrants are bad for the area's quality of life and economy, both of which are untrue. Much of Tucson's economy is derived from Mexican tourists who come here to vacation and shop, he said. The lawsuit won't cost Tucson taxpayers anything because it will be handled by city staff attorneys, with assistance expected to come from other cities and counties that oppose the law, council members said. The solid support for a suit is in sharp contrast to a week ago when the council went into closed-door session and then took no action. Several days after that meeting, three council members - Regina Romero, Karin Uhlich and Richard Fimbres - announced their support for a lawsuit. They were unable to attract a fourth vote at that time. After a week of demonstrations and being at the top of the national news agenda, however, the pendulum appears to have swung. Neither Walkup nor Councilwoman Shirley Scott has fully explained their political shift. Tucson's action is also decidedly different than that of city leaders in Phoenix. There, Mayor Phil Gordon said he and other Arizona mayors plan to file a challenge to the state's new immigration law, after the Phoenix City Council refused to support his call for action. On Monday Phoenix City Attorney Gary Verburg said only the City Council has the power to authorize lawsuits. Gordon said the legal action he's talking about won't be funded by Phoenix taxpayers.
Makes me happy! Race war in 3...2...1... :psyboom:
Fuckin' god damnit. I hate my city. Let's just ignore the executive order amending the law that specifically states that using someone's race as a point of suspicion is forbidden, and ignore the cops that do this sort of thing off the record anyway. Oh, and fuck the majority of voters that supported the law. All of this sun is melting my city-folk's brain. I need more boxes.
Oh, and fuck the majority of voters that supported the law.
Yes, fuck them.

Good for them, it was a fucked up law to start with and it doesn't look like it will help them in any possible way. Harassing tourists isn't exactly good for business.
Mayor Bob Walkup said the law is based on a misguided notion illegal immigrants are bad for the area's quality of life and economy, both of which are untrue. Much of Tucson's economy is derived from Mexican tourists who come here to vacation and shop, he said.
Fuck that cocksucker too. He doesn't want more rights for immigrants, he wants to shaft them in the ass just the same as the people who came up with and voted for SB 1070.
im pretty sure you don't understand the point of his post
I quoted you :frogdowns:
I thought you were being sarcastic
why would i be sarcastic about the tyranny of the majority yeah im totally in favor of major groups in small geographical locations restricting the rights of others makes total fucking sense [editline]12:39AM[/editline] the word tyranny is even in it
I thought you were being sarcastic
That wouldn't make sense being sarcasm. Usually you don't use the word "tyranny" in support of something.
Yo arizona's wack, with all it's pofilin' causin all kinds of hate, nobody smilin why can't we be happy, just sing a few songs we'll all stand together; Can't we just get along?
Because the illegal immigrants are destroying Arizona's economy.
