[release](Reuters) - Three workers were hospitalized in critical condition on Wednesday after a gas explosion in northeast Philadelphia that killed a colleague, a spokeswoman for Philadelphia Gas Works said.
The explosion Tuesday evening occurred in a high-pressure 12-inch gas main, said the spokeswoman for the city-owned utility.
The cause of the blast was unknown and under investigation, she said. The explosion occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in the Tacony section of northeast Philadelphia.[/release]

Just like your title.
I live across the river a bit, and thats about a mile or two away from the blast I beleive. In the middle of the night, we heard the bang. The fucking thing was so loud that it sounded like it came from right outside, so much so that me and my brother grabbed a baseball bat and a golf club becuase we thought someone was breaking in, shit's amazing. As we went outside to see what was going on, we noticed everyone else went outside too, and the story was eerily the same, it sounded like someone was breaking into their house. So me and my brother and his girlfriend decided to go down to the river and see what was going on. All we saw was the philly city-scape, dotted with red and blue lights, EMT sirens and a big plume of orange smoke that rose above everything else.
It was an interesting night, to say the least.
shit, rated myself trying to tab out of oblivion

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Gas Works confirms one of its employees died in Tuesday night's gas-main blast, and it doesn't yet know what triggered the explosion.
One PGW was parked on Wednesday at the center of the explosion. There was virtually nothing left of it.
Heavy equipment is picking apart what used to be a chiropractor's office, and that will be where investigators focus their attention.
The office was completely leveled by the blast.
In a statement, PGW said the employee was killed as he responded to an odor call on Torresdale Ave. around 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Three other PGW employees are currently being cared for at Temple University Hospital's Burn Unit.
"On behalf of PGW's officers and the entire PGW family, we extend our sincerest condolences and our continuing support to those involved in this tragic incident. Support services are being made available for all employees at PGW's Corporate Headquarters," the company said.
Three of the PGW workers were listed in critical condition Wednesday morning at Temple University Hospital's burn unit.
An injured Philadelphia firefighter was reported to be in guarded condition.
The incident was first reported as a hazmat scene around 7:30 p.m., when a 12-inch high-pressure gas main ruptured. Numerous repair workers responded to the call.
The explosion was reported about one hour later as crews were trying to repair the gas main break. There may have been a PGW truck near the explosion scene.
Fox 29 caught the explosion on tape, as debris flew after a gigantic flash and explosion.
The Red Cross says 15 to 20 families were displaced.
"Right now, we're scooping up all of the family members that are on the streets. It's really cold tonight, and we have them here at this rec center, right in the neighborhood down from the scene. Red Cross volunteers are giving out blankets, we're giving them something to drink, some hot chocolate and caring for people of all different ages right now. W've got about 60 people in the shelter," said Donna Palmierim CEO of the local American Red Cross.
The Red Cross said all of their people have found temporary places to stay. The organization will be providing direct financial assistance to several families affected by the explosion.[/quote]
I'm just glad more people weren't harmed
Guess it's not so sunny in there anymore
