A man whose bid to become a police officer was rejected after he scored too high on an intelligence test has lost an appeal in his federal lawsuit against the city.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower court’s decision that the city did not discriminate against Robert Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.“
This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America against people of a certain class,” Jordan said today from his Waterford home. “I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence than your eye color or your gender or anything else.”
He said he does not plan to take any further legal action.Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took the exam in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125. But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.
The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average.
Jordan alleged his rejection from the police force was discrimination. He sued the city, saying his civil rights were violated because he was denied equal protection under the law. But the U.S. District Court found that New London had “shown a rational basis for the policy.” In a ruling dated Aug. 23, the 2nd Circuit agreed.
The court said the policy might be unwise but was a rational way to reduce job turnover.Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.
What the fuck. I hate that "overqualified" jazz, I think it's unfair and complete bullshit.
i'm sorry, he was rejected for being too smart? That cop could have probably used his intelligence to save someone's life in the future. What a bullshit call.
They just don't want people who can think for themselves to be cops. What if they start questioning the law or ridiculous rules or orders from overpaid dick meisters?
That happened to me once, I applied for a position as a webpage designer for a school related club and got turned down because I was too good at web design. I am also not even good at web design :saddowns:

What the fuck.
The system works!

Then again... I think it could be a good thing?
well that doesn't bode well

It's expensive to teach someone how to misuse pepper spray.
everything wrong with modern police forces in a nutshell
"sorry youre too smart for this job"
I can sort of see their logic, but that is just plain retarded. Surely they need smart people higher up in the ranks?
Never really found IQ as an accurate measure of intelligence. To me, it's more how readily someone can learn something rather than how smart they are.
I wonder if the United States is just an anomaly, or if intelligence is frowned upon elsewhere in the world.

i doubt there is any statistical evidence to support that idea and it's something they pulled completely out of their ass
if a smart person wants to do something and is determined to do it, they know what they're doing and they're gonna do it
If he's a genius and he wants nothing more than to be a cop, let him be a cop. You shouldn't keep people from achieving their goals because you think they won't like it.
Also, if he's too intelligent to be a police officer, don't you think he's intelligent enough to know what he wants to do? This is ridiculous.

this happened in the UK
125 isn't even that high, really. It's certainly above average, but it's not even close to genius or anything like that.
So I guess I couldn't become a cop in New London.

IQ is purely retaining knowledge, memory, etc, it doesn't really measure how well one actually uses it.
Even if you can remember entire math books, it doesn't mean jack shit if you can't even apply that knowledge.
Now, remembering a math book front to back after reading it 3 times and very easily remembering AND applying it all. THAT is true intelligence.

no, it happened in the US
still doesnt make what Mr. Bleak said any less dumb, however

Wow, another person that has no idea what IQ is
It's not a test of knowledge, it's a test of intelligence that is determined almost entirely by pattern recognition

What I'm saying is that there's very little indication that the future is heading in that direction, it's actually the opposite
If all scientists quit and go to work on penis enhancing drugs I'll take this back
this happened in the UK
No it didn't.
That was probably already said but IQ != Intelligence. It just means that under certain circumstances (aka the ones of an IQ test) you are thinking slightly faster than someone else. The value itself isn't even reliable as it can greatly vary depending on your physical and mental status at the moment of the evaluation, so basically the IQ is a shit statistic, except if you pass something like 5 tests and do an average.
The other big problem with IQ is that it's pushing people to be assholes. Tell someone he's intelligent and give him a value that isn't contested by most of the world as a proof and you have a fifty-fifty chance of seeing him turn into a giant douche and refuse to take orders from others/respect their opinions because he estimates he doesn't have to, as some arbitrary value told he was smarter than them.
They might have not picked that one cop because that high IQ could have pushed him towards being an asshole who thinks he doesn't have to take orders/to treat people well because he's smarter than them. But again seeing how much shit stains are in the Police, it's really being stupid to not take a guy because he might turn into a douche while having an assumed, obvious douche right in front of you misusing pepper sprays and tazers and going police brutality over anyone in the street for jackshit reasons.
