If I were there, I'd have just said 'nope' and left the scene until the beach got cleaned up, at any rate I'd try looking around for starting a cleanup drive.

To be honest I don't see the beach getting cleaned up soon, pollution in China doesn't seem to be a very big issue for the government.

Truth be told sometimes our own beaches end up in terrible condition after major festivals. Who am I kidding, they always end up in terrible condition after major festivals. I think they cleaned out around 20 tons of trash from the Marina beach last year after the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations, if I have the news article right.

For those who don't know, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated in China to commentate the death of poet and statesman Qu Yuan. Long story short, his king didn't follow his advice and paid dearly for it when his state collapsed. In despair, Qu Yuan killed himself. To prevent Qu Yuan's body from being eaten by fish, peasants started putting zongzi into the river.

Here is a joke.

I guess littering all over the place and destroying natural habitat is a good way to prevent the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. After all, the fish would all die because of the destroyed habitat.
