• BT boss has only broadband home

British Telecom (BT) has admitted its chairman is the only person in a village on the Oxfordshire-Buckinghamshire border with broadband.
Other people in Hambleden were told they could not have broadband because of the distance to the exchange. BT said Sir Michael Rake's connection was part of a trial of new technology, and no company could afford to provide broadband to the area. One local resident said it was not fair and that Sir Michael should resign. 'Preferential treatment' In a statement, BT wrote: "Trials of new technologies are often conducted among a company's own staff so there is nothing unusual in this situation. "BT has learnt a lot through the trial the chairman participated in and hopefully those lessons will benefit the residents of Hambleden in due course. "We have sympathy for the residents of Hambleden. "Several companies actually supply broadband from the exchange serving their village but the lines between the village and the exchange are simply too long to support a broadband service." Gary Ashworth, who lives in Hambleden, said: "If I was a BT shareholder I'd be upset... I think one can live with it, if it's a level playing field it's not a problem. "It's this preferential treatment that Sir Michael Rake has had that's upset most of the villagers." In May research commissioned by the BBC found that about three million homes in the UK have no broadband or speeds of less than two megabits per second (2Mbps). The government has promised to provide all homes in the UK with speeds of at least 2Mbps by 2012. ("broadband" being an ISDN connection of at least 64kb/s at least)

Local residents of Hambledon on the Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire border have accused BT of preferential treatment to their chairman by giving him broadband, whilst the rest of the village have been suffering for years with no access to broadband. BT have only been able to provide the service through the use of a trial technology called BET (broadband enabling technology) that allows broadband to work at speeds of up to 1Mbps at a distance of 12km. The exchange serving the village is broadband enabled, however most lines are too long for standard broadband to work. It is common practice that companies give trials to employees before releasing to the general public, however this trial has touched some nerves and we hope the trial is opened up to other residents quickly. It is estimated that it can cost up to £3000 per line to enable broadband through BET. Residents should at least be pleased that BT haven't paid ten's of thousands to provide Rake with a dedicated leased line which wouldn't assist them in getting a broadband service any sooner.
Another reason Mandelson should be shot dead for allowing this
Ha, by 2012 most of us in my country will be at 100Mbps. I have been since 2007 or 2008 or so. Can't wait for 1Gbit lines.

BT suck for Broadband anyway.
His company his rules, I mean if you have a bakery and you make one big cake for yourself then you can eat it, nobody in your shop will be angry.
His company his rules, I mean if you have a bakery and you make one big cake for yourself then you can eat it, nobody in your shop will be angry.
what an awesome analogy.
what an awesome analogy.
Well the car analogy would go: I own the car repair shop, fuck you, you, you, you, and especially that old lady who blocks the traffic at 4pm, I repair my car first
BT suck for Broadband anyway.
This includes all broadband providers. BT just run the exchanges.
I'd love to get pissed at this guy, but honestly, I can't. He's the chairman of the company and can do what he wants. I'm sure that the only reason he has broadband and no one else does in the village is because it would cost too much to run all of the lines for everyone, and it wouldn't make enough money considering how many people live in the village. So they just run a line for him... He owns the company, he can do what he wants with it.

Hehe :P
His company his rules, I mean if you have a bakery and you make one big cake for yourself then you can eat it, nobody in your shop will be angry.
They will be angry when you tell them you won't sell them any of your goods.
Well the car analogy would go: I own the car repair shop, fuck you, you, you, you, and especially that old lady who blocks the traffic at 4pm, I repair my car and my car only
Analogy fixed.

He's the chairman of BT. He NEEDS to have broadband. He's the goddamn boss. If he does anything (as in, anything even slightly business related) at home, he NEEDS it. Imagine hearing about that shitty BT not even being able to provide their own boss with normal internet to work with. Yeah, sounds lame. If he'd be a lower level worker few people would care.
I don't know why you all think the Chairman is the boss of the company, but you're wrong. A CEO is the boss of a company.
I don't know why you all think the Chairman is the boss of the company, but you're wrong. A CEO is the boss of a company.
Chairman is one of the bosses, CEO isn't some dictator.
Chairman is one of the bosses, CEO isn't some dictator.
He can be if he wants its not a country he's running. CEO can overule a Chairman if he wants to. Its his god damn company ( assuming their is only one CEO ) Nevermind in the united states all these terms are interchangable, long live usa. (only in america )
They will be angry when you tell them you won't sell them any of your goods. Analogy fixed.
It's more like
I own the car repair shop, fuck you, I'm not repairing that Jaguar for normal price, they're way too hard to tinker with for their own good and I'm repairing mine right now. Pay a premium or get out.
It's a bit of a dick move but he shouldn't have to fucking RESIGN over it. I hate idiots who think everyone in any kind of high position should resign any time they put a foot wrong.
