• House oversight chairman leaves town hall 40 minutes early after "do your job" chants erupt
On Thursday night, two Republican members of Congress -- Reps. Jason Chaffetz of Utah and Diane Black of Tennessee -- were each confronted with impassioned constituents during simultaneous events. The shouted questions, emotional pleas and raucous protesters of the evening crystalized the GOP's tough political road ahead as it forges ahead with rolling back Obama's accomplishments, including the Affordable Care Act. In suburban Salt Lake City, local police estimated that some 1,000 people packed into a high school auditorium to see Chaffetz as hundreds more waited outside. For 75 minutes, the congressman confronted a crowd that fumed with resentment of Trump and accused Chaffetz of coddling the President.

The crowd erupted in chants of "Do your job!" when Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, was pressed on why his panel spent months investigating Clinton's emails but has not yet launched inquiries into Trump's taxes (Trump has declined to release his tax returns). "You're really not going to like this part: The President, under the law, is exempt from the conflict of interest laws," he said.
Source Source2 This guy is such a scumbag, you can tell he's just enjoying this from his demeanor in the video. Basically laughing it off and not even trying to answer questions, just saying things he knows will upset everyone. I doubt he holds another town hall ever again.
Then primary him, and get a grassroots Republican or progressive in his place. [editline]10th February 2017[/editline]
"You're really not going to like this part: The President, under the law, is exempt from the conflict of interest laws," he said.
Bullshit, Trump was still benefiting off his business up to a full week after inauguration. And transferring ownership to his immediate family reeks of nepotism. Its most obvious breach of conflict of interest and you know it.
"You're really not going to like this part: The President, under the law, is exempt from the conflict of interest laws," he said.
I don't get this, wouldn't the president be the one person you don't want to have conflicts of interest interfering with his job? Also, what's the point of blindtrusts if not to minimize the possibility of conflicts of interest? That's contradictory. American laws are weird.
"You're really not going to like this part: The President, under the law, is exempt from the conflict of interest laws," he said.
Really? Way to go to get even more people to hate you.

"trump hasnt done anything illegal" well clinton didn't apparently do anything illegal either but you refuse to shut the case on that one plus we don't know anything about trumps finances to make a determination which way or the other but the 2012 stock act does explicidly apply to presidents so yes we absolutely do need to investigate since hes made the stocks of many companies go on rollercoaster rides and once again refuses to divulge any details of his own finances
"If these people don't like what's going on in government, why don't they do anything about it??!!?!?!??!"
"I want to get rid of Betsy DeVos!" Man: "We want to get rid of you!" That burned him so hard that I just got a contact burn from reading it.
A hermit government led by malevolent misfits. America has made one of the greatest mistakes of its life.
Jason Chaffetz does an amazing job in the HOC, like for example the recent Conway Ethics Violation: https://twitter.com/GOPoversight/status/829819360009125889/photo/1. Go look at his work the last few years on youtube and cspan. Just because of your hate Trump is not a reason to hate Chaffetz. He's not perfect but he's done a great job so far and these people have lost the plot here. I would walk out of that too if they do not want to listen and just wanted to chant and make a scene.
Sounds like he doesn't represent the views of his constituents to me

Doesn't say anything about any repercussions. Hardly an amazing job. He wasted tons of tax money grilling Hilary after countless people said the investigation was over and now refuses to even acknowledge trump might have any conflict of interest what so ever.

Trump filed an order to pull it out of bankruptcy using federal money people would still fucking think there is no conflict of interest
Wouldn't be surprised if people start trying to mob Trump's administration and House officials with how things are going.
Can I punch this dickhead in the face yet?
I want to say, that if he did somehow come down on Trump himself (again, there are very few Conflict of Interest laws relating to the Presidency) it would set a dangerous political precedent. It would mean any president who conceivably benefits by their actions in any way, not just an unpopular one with 'a lot' of connections, would be just as 'guilty' as Trump would be. Which would mean virtually every president we have had in recent times would be just as much a criminal as Trump would be, and every president going forward would be held to a genuinely unattainable standard of scrutiny, or, would literally be vulnerable to whimsical prosecution. Neither of those things make for a good Ethics committee. I do not like Trump, nor do I like his clear and obvious profiteering from the White House, but we cannot just make things up to retroactively punish him for things that other people were, at least, less blatant about. If you want to get monied interests out of the White House and politics, first laws have to exist to get those things out.

Now without a better picture of his finances there's no way to tell if that means all of his traded assets or just the equities, but as of now I believe the President is actually complying with the STOCK Act.
Can I punch this dickhead in the face yet?
We'll support you if you want to. People like him need to understand that if they keep this shit up, it's going to get them into trouble eventually. They are pissing a lot of people off very quickly, and that doesn't bode well for them. "We outnumber you." That's the message they need to understand.
I too trust a president known for lying to abide to an honor code
I'm afraid that's probably your only option, that is until the next financial disclosure form is required in 2018. Have fun waiting, I guess.
Chaffetz told the paper that he was sure that the protestors, who chanted "shame!" and grilled him on investigating President Donald Trump, were Democrats and that they were trying to cause "chaos" because they don't like Trump and are upset about the results of the 2016 election. "You could see it online a couple days before, a concerted effort in part to just cause chaos," he said, according to the Deseret News. "Democrats are in disbelief that they have nothing but flailing and screaming to deal with this."
Why his he treating his own constituents like something that can be ignored just because they support the democratic party
If his constituents feel they are being represented fairly, it's their damn right to make a scene.
If he was elected based on the platform and policies he campaigned on then he is bound to follow that platform for the majority who elected him. I don't like it, I don't like his platform, his excuse to get rid of DeVos by eliminating the DoE is scummy, but by being re-elected his constituents obviously must feel they are being represented, or the majority is. If you vote left and expect a conservative politician to fairly represent you then throw me whatever it is you're smoking.
