HARRISBURG, Pa. (KDKA) – Add Pennsylvania to the list of states where residents could be allowed to possess and smoke marijuana legally.
Democrat State Sen. Daylin Leach, who represents Montgomery and Delaware counties, announced plans to introduce legislation that would legalize marijuana in Pennsylvania.
The bill would legalize marijuana for adults over the age of 21, and regulated just like alcohol is. It would still be illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana, behave badly while publicly intoxicated, or sell pot to minors.
According to Leach, “Like alcohol, legalization and regulation will make marijuana safer. People will no longer have to buy it on the streets from criminals who may have laced their product with other dangerous drugs. People buying legally will know exactly what they are getting and be able to rely on the safety of what they are purchasing.”
A press release from Leach’s office says that according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in 2006, an average year, 24,685 marijuana arrests were made in Pennsylvania at a cost to the taxpayers of $325.36 million. Leach says “each year we not only waste a similar amount, we leave several hundred million dollars on the table in taxes that we do not collect because marijuana is illegal, rather than regulated and taxed.”
Gov. Tom Corbett has been opposed to legalizing marijuana, even for medicinal purposes.
Sen. Leach says, “This horrific policy must end. People around the nation are realizing that. And it is a moral imperative that Pennsylvania wake up and end prohibition now.”

Marijuana legalization snow ball effect

[sp]Influence the south[/sp]
So how many years until it is recognized on a federal level?
I hope it influences the south to pass it, I don't even care if it's this particular state, if Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, or Texas (especially texas) legalizes it, it's bound to have a snowball effect.

I remember hearing a rumor that Obama is looking over that, or is my head hearing what it wants to hear?

If a southern state legalizes, it's probably going to be Mississippi first... Like, everyone does it and we're already into decriminalizing.
So it's going to be sold in stores just like any product?

We hardly ever get snow, and it doesn't look like we will this year.
In a related note, why is it currently 72F/22C outside in the middle of fucking January?
yeah, it's like 80 degrees here in louisiana, while refreshing, it's january, why isn't it fucking cold
Please spread down to Maryland. Weed is way too expensive here right now.

To put this in scale, the city of Harrisburg owes around the tune of 340 million dollars on their incinerator.
I understand this cost is spread across the state ( although likely not very evenly - the wilds have a very low population density compared to the rest ), but jesus that's a lot of money.
Given how we have the Liquor Control Board, would they step in and regulate the marijuana or be the base of how it is done? Would these run companion to the Wine and Spirits or be sold in the same store?
I can't see this being a privatized thing given the federal interest.
Wish you all the best of luck...
So far it's been pretty amusing/fun here in Colorado. Everyone is smoking it, and no one gives a shit. It's still illegal to smoke and drive, but of course everyone does it still.. and the result is a bit of an overwhelmed police force that doesn't quite know what to do with it.
But I have to say; Going to a friends' party in the back of a Limo he rented, smoking the fattest blunt I have ever smoked, was quite the fucking blast.
I wonder what it will seem like in a couple of generations, our generation will be a weird group of grandparents.
"Back in my day there was no same sex marriage and you could go to prison for smoking weed!"

AND YOU COULD ALMOST GO TO PRISON FOR SAYING SOMETHING STUPID ON THE INTERNET!
Here's to hoping it passes and legalization makes its way across the nation.
I'm so fucking sick of living under threat of fines and potential jail time just because I like to smoke a bowl every now and then.
This would be a win for the tri state area :D
Please come across the pond.
congratulations philadelphia, now when does California get in on this?

To my knowledge privatization has already begun. I believe you no longer need to show a medical card at dispensaries in the states where it's legalized.
I could be wrong though.
