An American gun company has found a way around the anti-Russia sanctions that have banned imports of the Kalashnikov assault rifle: Make them here, in the U.S.A.The U.S.-made gun will have same name as the original: AK-47, arguably the most ubiquitous assault rifle in the world.
The gun will be made by American company RWC, which is the official importer and distributor of Kalashnikov AK-47s. The company had to stop importing the guns after the U.S. imposed sanctions in July against Russia for its role in the Ukraine crisis.
RWC said it is not permitted to have any contact with the Russian company, Kalashnikov Concern, which makes the AK-47s.
"We are not permitted to pick up the phone and to talk to them," said Thomas McCrossin, CEO of RWC, which owns the Kalashnikov USA brand. "We were forced to stop doing business with them because of the sanctions."
RWC, based in Tullytown, Pa., has the rights to the AK-47 Kalashnikov brand of guns, which has been produced in the Soviet Union after World War II.
It is arguably one of the most famous firearm brands in the world. The original AK-47s are made by the 200-year-old Russian company, but it is one of the most copied assault rifles in the world with knock-offs made all over the globe, including China, Europe and the U.S.
Cheap SKS, cheap SVDs, SV-98s, Saigas, all AK variants!
This is a dream come true. Kalashnikov is going the same route that CZ went, hopefully more European gun companies follow. I'd love to get my hands on one of those handmade double barrel shotguns for clay-shooting!

Are they really going to make true SVDsv and not just PSLs with a different name? We haven't been able to get true SVDs since Clinton's ban on the Chinese ones.
Fucking. Glorious.

AKM, made in the USA.
That man has massive hands
holy shit, finally i can get some new SKS parts
Oh god I'd love to pick up an SKS to plink around with. My Uncle always tells me about how in the late 80's he picked up 2 SKS's for 40 bucks.
There's something strange about one of the most iconic things to come from Russia, the Great Bear of the Cold War, be in such demand by it's enemy that it is now actually produced BY it's enemy. There's nothing bad or wrong with this, but it's strange to see how time has played a joke on us all with this nuance...
Groza groza groza groza groza
I feel like I should buy one just because I feel like this won't last. Then again, with a GOP supermajority, the gun trade is the one thing we don't really have to worry about right now.

Well if there was anything Ivan knew how to do, it's starve their people and build rad guns
I sure hope this means I can buy a decent SVD without having to take out a car loan...
Ha! awesome! I've been saving a few hundred bucks for a WASR or AK74 for a few months now, now I can get a decent one for much cheaper. What a time to be alive.

This isn't new... US companies have been doing this for years.

Yeah, but now it's a true Kalashnikov.
And SVD/SVDS and SKS. Another cool thing is that they might sell the Bizon here!
This isn't new... US companies have been doing this for years.
It may be illegal here, but that doesn't mean it's not legal somewhere else!
Yeah, but now it's a true Kalashnikov.

You realize AKs have never been made under a "Kalshnikov" brand before, right? "Real" AKs are made in the Russian/Soviet state armories like Tula

Have they actually confirmed the SVD and SKS?
I wish they would also make a mosin in .308
Where are you people getting all this shit about SVDs, SKS, etc? It doesn't say anything about that in the article. Also:
AK-47
Not even once.
[sp]They're AKMs.[/sp]
I wish they would also make a mosin in .308
Yes, lets make a garbage rifle instead of in a cheap caliber like they already come in, lets make it in a caliber that costs $1 a pop.
Bout damn time, would love to have a US made, Kalashnikov brand AK.

Walmart has Tula .308 20 rounds for like $8.
Because we all need Ak-47s

Izhmash produces AR-15s and some Russian special forces even use AR-15s too so there's nothing out of the ordinary here.
It's not officially Kalashnikov.
Just as an FYI.

does owning the rights not make it official though? They just can't coordinate with their Russian benefactor-parent
They're just hamhandedly trying to say "Look guys our AK copy is totally different than all the other AK copies out there. It's totally a real AK even though we can't even do so much as talk to Kalashnikov."
american-kalashnikov 47?
It's not officially Kalashnikov.

Even the Russian Kalashnikov Concern was not a brand until 2013, "real" AK series were and still are manufactured by a variety of Russian companies and this is just one of them renamed for marketing purposes.
'Kalashnikov AK-47' is a bit like saying 'Browning 1911'...
Still, cool that this guy wants to manufacture AKs in the US, don't think that's been done before (outside of rebuilding parts kits).
does owning the rights not make it official though? They just can't coordinate with their Russian benefactor-parent
They own the rights to import and distribute them.
They aren't going to be actual Kalashnikov. They're going to be AK pattern guns made by the people who import the actual Kalashnikovs.
