Several explosions have been heard in the centre of the Indonesian capital and casualties were seen lying on the ground, witnesses say.
Police were not immediately available for comment, but according to an official Jakarta police Twitter account, one explosion went off in front of a shopping centre called the Sarinah mall.
At least three casualties were seen lying on the street, according to an AFP journalist at the scene.
A police post on a main street was damaged after six blasts were heard.
Gunfire was ringing out in the area afterwards, the journalist said.

Damn
I hope the damage isn't that extensive. I have a few Indonesian friends, and nobody deserves this kind of thing.
6 blasts and gunfire? I hope not, that's a pretty big deal.

The news is speculating that they may have been grenades, but the footage that's out looks too big/fiery for a grenade.
They are now deploying the snipers in attempt to fight them, and the news speculates that this might be caused by ISIS

Shit's happening at Thamrin, they're also targeting areas at West, South and Tangerang

If the early reports are confirmed to be true, then it's almost definitely an organized attack. If not some ISIS affiliate, then probably some other group.
Indonesia's had problems with theocrats going back decades if not a century or so. It's quite likely that whoever did this- if they are Islamist- is home grown but pledged to IS.
It's over.

Article says 7 terrorists, 4 dead, several civilians injured, 2 dead. They say the bomb they're using is some sort of low explosive but contains shrapnels and nails.

A bit inconsistent here, this one says 5 terrorists dead, 2 arrested

Local news says one of the 7 dead is a Canadian.
The significant difference in amount of posts and interest in this thread versus the one about Paris/any attack in Europe/"The West" is confusing me.

I fail to see how one disaster is more important than another.

It's always going to exist aslong as we have the media system that we do. Although you're right, it's absolutely staggering.
Anyway,
RIP to all the victims :/ Looks like Indonesia's response was pretty much "yeah we're not fucking about with this cunt"

7 vs 150 deaths , less people calling for censorship of a silly muslim cartoon, most of the people that post are in the west, etc.

that's only because you can't see the obvious that more local news is always more interesting to people

Most people on FP have a closer connection to the West than East asia
this sucks but it impacts less people on this website
You'll need to zoom in, but these images show the shooters in the crowd.

Besides, this isn't big compared to Paris, the only building destroyed is a police outpost, and a trashed cafe, not to mention only 7 civilians died, but this is still some serious shit.
Even Darth Vader hates terrorism:

Plus, stuff like this isn't something that happens a lot of times in the western world.
Well, maybe in the US, but that's a different beast.
If this happened in the West then probably everybody would be out for Muslim blood already.
But I guess this bombing doesnt matter since it happened in Muslim-majority country.

Well, its obvious that Islamism should have some kind of effect on Muslim countries, but it is surprising to most people that it should have some kind of effect on non-Muslim countries, where there is effectively no hope of the terrorists achieving their political goals, even in comparison to the slim hope in a country like Indonesia.

Of course the usual 'It happened in X country, where's all the outrage!'
If you're still thinking that they are political goal-oriented, then we are not on the same page.
They are angry people, fueled by hatred on western society and anything associated with them.
We are on the same page, I just cast the net for political goals very widely.
People don't care about this as much as the Paris attacks because:
- This attack was of a much smaller scale
- Most people probably don't know what a 'Jakarta' is
- On that note most people probably don't know what an 'Indonesia' is
- Attacks like this are (or were) very rare in the West, not so much in SE Asia
i dont know where you guys get the idea of attacks like this isn't a rarity in indonesia, because it is a rarity in indonesia
but i can understand why it does not cause as much outrage as the paris attacks since this board is mostly western, when the paris attacks happens not much happens on my social medias, but when this attacks happens my social medias went absolutely nuts
That's a very uninformed statement. Lots of SE Asian countries may have shit living standards compared to the west but terrorist activities like these are definitely not common.
