The director general of the BBC, Tony Hall, has rejected demands from a cross-party group of MPs, including Boris Johnson and Alex Salmond, to stop the broadcaster using the term “Islamic State” to refer to the terrorist group.
The MPs made their demand in a letter following criticism of the BBC from David Cameron, who used an appearance on the Today programme on Monday to suggest that Muslim listeners would “recoil every time they hear the words Islamic State” to refer to its “appalling, barbarous regime”.
Initiated by Rehman Chishti, the Conservative MP for Gillingham and Rainham, the letter urged the BBC to instead adopt the term “Daesh”, based on Arabic acronym al-Dawla al-Islamiya fil Iraq wa’al Sham, which translates as Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (Syria), but is close to “Dahes” or “one who sows discord”. It was signed by 120 MPs including the London mayor Boris Johnson and chair of the home affairs select committee Keith Vaz.
How about no?
yeah but that's what it's named.

We should stop using the word "Nazi" because normal Germans would be recoil at the linking of that appalling, barbarous regime to German workers.
It's like calling them Daesh because some articles said they really hate that name.

News threads (almost) all started to call them daesh since that article. The reason for that is presumably that they really hate it.
Calling them something else for that reason is really a bad attempt at trolling. That is if you're only doing it because they hate it, because then you're only doing it to try to get them angry.
A better reason to not call them IS or ISIS is that you don't want them to think that we implicitly acknowledge that they're building some kind of sovereign Islamic state. Calling them daesh won't help you with that though because daesh also contains the words Islamic state (in Arabic).

Lets officially call them Dickwads. To piss them off. Like imagine every credible news agency calling them Dickwads.
I will even get my word replacer script running with this:

Now that would be some media coverage
should just go all the way and start calling them "those cunts"

Referring to them as the Islamic State implies legitimacy (and that's what they want to be called), as if they are a sovereign state. Which they aren't, shouldn't ever be and won't ever be. Yes ISIS is an acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, but the word 'state' isn't really implied when you read it. Nor when you read Daesh.
Many people would argue that ISIS isn't the correct name of the organization, so I think referring to them as the self-proclaimed Islamic State would be better.

Daesh literally means the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham in Arabic. That's exactly what I understand when I read/hear Daesh in Arabic.
This is just hyper political correctness as usual in the UK. Calling them the 'Islamic state' might hurt Muslim's feelings? Yeah right. Most Muslims I know don't give a shit what you call them, they just want rid of them.
Isnt it "So Called Islamic State" when BBC says it? :v: i know this because it gets under my skin every fuckin' time.

Ironically, Hitler et al abhorred the word Nazi because it was a stereotypical name for a German bumpkin at the time (think Cletus). It was only ever used by their detractors, much like Daesh today.

thats pretty funny but i just want to say that its better to spell loosers as "losers" because "loosers" means people who are loose (the opposite of tight), for example loose women.

An unrecognised state is still a state.
I think refusing to call them a state actually downplays their importance and make it sound like your average terrorist group rather than an organisation that control a sizeable territory.

So what, should the United Nations offer them a seat in their assembly because they are supposedly (according to themselves) a state?

They are a state no matter how evil they are and no matter how much everyone wants them not to be one...
I can't wait until the political situation changes and we end up allied with ISIS. It'll happen.
I'll call em whatever the fuck I want. I think I'll call 'em "Super Bad Guys".
They should just continue to refer to them as "the so called" IS. Like them or not, they have pretty much formed a state and that is the name they go by.
So what, should the United Nations offer them a seat in their assembly because they are supposedly (according to themselves) a state?
No? The UN decide which states have legitimacy, they don't have to align with the de facto situation.
I can't wait until the political situation changes and we end up allied with ISIS. It'll happen.
Nobody was allied with them and I dont think they will. They don't have anything to give to western powers (or anyone, really). And they don't even want to.
You can't ally with someone that uncooperative. If they were a regular dictatorship it would be a different story. But they are too savage for diplomacy games.
How about you refer to them with whatever you see as fitting? Like the hell dogs.
I couldn't care less how much bad pr islam gets, this is the reality we live in and there's nothing anyone can do.
Unless muslims go on a full out world war amongst themselves, then this entire extreme debacle will always be around.
How about salafi state?
All the names mean the same thing. Why would you not use one over the other? You can even have a report at the moment that uses all of them on rotation.

If I recall correctly, Daesh implies illegitimacy of the Islamic State whereas just Islamic state implies that it is fully representative of all islam.

Congrats on illustrating exactly why the BBC wants to change the terminology it's using. Because calling it "Islamic State" is feeding into the biases and prejudgements of people like you
Let's all pretend for a second that the Westboro Baptist Church family was referred to as "the christian state". Do you think any christians would get offended? Most of you know not all christians all as awful as the Westboro nutters but only a few of you seem to see the problem with lumping THE ENTIRE ISLAMIC COMMUNITY(which is huge) into this one little narrowminded fringe group.
Also yeah, calling them a "state" only gives them validation that they're gaining recognition. Kind of a bad move on the media's part. But I suppose it's their "scariest" sounding name so far. Gotta rake in those paranoia dollars.

They started calling themselves that when news was first being reported, and the media sticking to the same name prevents confusion.
It's confusing enough when the BBC says 'so called islamic state', then gives a report by Kurds who call them daesh, and then a speech by Obama who called them ISIL.
It's imo far more important to give people the basics to keep the average person informed rather than go crazy about who calls who what.

The Ottoman Empire was once a bunch of murderous tribesmen, and we ended up allied with them in the Crimean War. England was started by a bunch of marauding Germanics. Heck, one of Rome's first efforts of expansion was invading a nearby city and dragging their women into forced marriages. If we can sell arms to the Saudis, I'm sure we can do a deal with ISIS once they get settled down and develop realpolitik (and we find ourselves with some shared enemy).
