Old supercomputers don't die, they just get practical day jobs. China's Tianhe-1A, the fastest supercomputer in the world in 2011, is now being put to use tracking the terrifying and deadly clouds of pollution that come with burning almost as much coal as the rest of the world combined, according to a report from Xinhua, a state-owned media company. Surely, in China, this could be accomplished with a Magic 8-Ball with all the sides of the little message thing inside set to "yes". They didn't need to repurpose a supercomputer.
I can do that job as well, i'll probably cost less. [cpp] boolean isChinaBurningCoal = true; if(isChinaBurningCoal) { System.out.println("There will be smog today"); } [/cpp]
Computer, is there still smog? > YES Good work, computer.
I don't see how this will be much help; Surely people will have to head out to work/food shopping regardless of the smog forecast. Especially since China isn't known for allowing their citizens a very flexible workday.

i dont think he implied that they did
Why not just use a canary? If you hold it outside a window and it dies, then the weather is normal.
I love china's way of thinking. "Hey we have this smog problem, lets figure out how to predict when the deadliest smog will happen using all these resources that could be otherwise used to fix the actual problem." Or my more favorite "The smog makes it so we can't monitor people through cameras, quick, get infrared cameras that can see through the smog."

Monday: Heavy Smog; the Sun will barely be visible. Tuesday: Heavy smog; a faint outline of the sun will be seen from 3-5 PM. Wednesday: Heavier Smog; "Bring out those gas masks, folks, this one is a mess!" Thursday: Heavier smog; "where is the sun? What does it look like? Turn into the 6 o'clock news to find out!" Friday: COUGHCOUGHHACKHACKHACKSPLUTTER smog; "Fucking hell, it's like staring into a black quilt that caught fire!"
Its smogging sideways
