unless it's for a business to give to other people, as a representative, professional email as an employee is just fine

Hotmails pretty cool now, I still use it because they let you add alias email accounts under the same email account.
I've got 3 email accounts that are all under the one account, they all have their own inboxes

Google Apps is basically an upgraded, custom domain, non-ad filled, Gmail, it's also fairly straight forward last I checked. There's also things like Zimbra if you want to find a provider that will keep your data from the NSA or something.
I think Amazon will also be launching a competing service soon.
Having a professional Email address (one on your own domain) lets you do some awesome stuff like:
Being able to designate SPFs, DKIM signing, configuring DMARC on the domain (so none of your email is blacklisted), end to end encryption, unlimited alias users, attachments of whatever size you're willing to pay for, large AF mailboxes, and a bunch of other things that I haven't ran into.
Usually a business will give you a email address with them (like how each employee at Valve has a Valve address), but I think standard practice is to use that for mostly internal or business related work, you can then have a "professional" address to use for anything else, since they usually make "personal" addresses redundant.
